Guidelines and Guide Questions for Final Group Project

1. Read Chapters 3, 7, 8, 9, 10, 17 and 18. These will provide you with the theoretical
background needed to complete the project.

2. Choose a small – to medium – scale enterprise, preferably a family business of one of your
group mates or of your relatives or friends. This company will be the object of your inquiry.

3. Nature of the business. Describe and illustrate the business as an open system. Show how it
transforms its resource inputs into product and/or service outputs.

4. Specific environment. Briefly describe the key stakeholders of the business, and how they
affect the business.
a. Who are ate major stockholders or partners of the business, if any?
b. Who are its main suppliers?
c. Who are its regular customers?
d. Who are its main competitors?
e. Which particular government agencies does it deal with?

5. General environment. Identify key aspects of the social-cultural, technological, economic,


political-legal, natural-environmental sectors that are critical to the industry in which your
business belongs. Specify whether these aspects are Opportunities or Threats for the business.

6. Strategy and Planning


a. What does the company want to achieve in the future / long-term (vision)?
b. What does it intend to do (strategies) to achieve its vision? Business – unit strategies?
Functional strategies?
c. Does the company have the needed resources (internal Strengths) to implement these
strategies? What internal Weaknesses could prevent the company from implementing
its strategies well?
d. Describe how planning takes place in the company. What planning approach does it
utilize? Is this appropriate for the requirements of the company? Explain.
e. If the company does not have a formal planning process, what planning approach will
be appropriate for it? Explain.

7. Controlling
a. What particular aspects of the business (key result areas) would controls be most
needed? Explain.
b. What types of controls (e.g. feed forward, concurrent, and feedback) are utilized by
the company? Describe these control systems or mechanisms. Are these controls
effective or ineffective and why or why not?
c. What other control mechanisms would you propose in addition to the controls being
implemented by company? Describe the proposed controls.

8. Organizing
a. How is the company organized? (Note: You will be able to determine this by
preparing a chart showing the reporting relationships of people in the company).
What particular organization structure does the company’s structure resemble?
b. Do you think the company’s organizational structure is mechanistic, organic, mostly
mechanistic, or mostly organic? Explain.
c. Does the organization design fit in well with the major problems or Threats and
Opportunities of its external environment?
d. Does the organizational design support the implementation of strategies and the
accomplishment of key operating objectives?
e. Does the organizational design support the core technologies and allow them to be
used to the best advantage?
f. Does the organizational design support and empower workers and allow their talents
to be used to the best advantage?
g. What organizational structure would make the company more responsive to the
requirements of its customers and would make it even more competitive?

The Paper should not be more than 25 pages long with one and a half inch spacing and one inch
margin on all sides of an 8 ½ in. X 11 in. white bond paper. Prescribed font size is 12 points of
Arial or Times New Roman.

Each group will be given between 15 – 20 minutes maximum to present the highlights of their paper
(within the 12th -13th week of the Term). Prepare a PowerPoint presentation and be in business attire.
A Peer Evaluation Form will also be done immediately after your presentation.
