Component Engine

The document discusses the key components and design features of Scania's new DC 13 cylinder block engine, including: - The cylinder block is made from compacted graphite iron and is available in 9, 13, and 16 liter configurations. - The cylinder liner features an integrated "saver ring" and improved sealing for coolant. Increased bore diameter allows for higher displacement. - Pistons are aluminum for the 9 liter and steel for the 13 liter. Piston cooling is via oil and rings transfer heat to the coolant. - The connecting rod has a tapered small end and split big end design to allow assembly/disassembly through the cylinder. - The cylinder head features four

Connecting rods
The upper part of the
connecting rod is
tapered shaped.
This allows for larger
contact surfaces in
piston and
connecting rod.
Transmits force of combustion to connecting rod
Connecting rod, Big end

The big end of the connecting

rod is split diagonally, so that
the piston and the connecting
rod can be pulled up through
the cylinder.

To prevent the connecting rod

bearing cap and the
connecting rod from becoming
offset, they are unmachined
fracture surfaces.

Cylinder head
With four valves per cylinder, the
total valve area becomes greater,
making it easier to fill the cylinder
with air.

At the same time, less energy is

consumed in forcing out the exhaust
fumes.

The injector can be located centrally,

which improves combustion and
results in reduced emissions and
lower fuel consumption.
