This month all students in the 8th grade will be starting Digital Citizenship Unit. During this unit,
students will be learning about how to use media and technology responsibly.
During this month we’ll reflect on the topics of how to create media balance in our life, build a
positive digital footprint, communicate kindly, build relationships, and stand up to hate on social
media platforms.
Our Digital Citizenship unit has been built on materials provided by the Common Sense
Education, a leading educational website, supporting educators and parents in a digital
citizenship curriculum, designed and developed in partnership with the Harvard Graduate
School of Education.
We would like to invite you to actively participate in our digital citizenship effort by having a
family conversation about how to use technology safely and responsibly at home and beyond.
Starting May 7th we will be sending emails with weekly Family Activities suggestions, which
include: offline family activities, tips on how to connect with family and friends, mindfulness
exercises, etc.
We hope you’ll find these activities, engaging, informative, and fun. For example, this week we
start with giving you “Five Tips on How to Help Kids Balance Their Media Life”. During this
weekend get active with some screen-free activities with your kids and try the app Forest.
Forest. Forest gamifies focus and gives back to the world. Participants set goals for when
and how they will use their personal devices, and Forest will plant a tree when they meet
their goals. Since its creation, over 230,000 trees have been planted.
Our FPMDigital Citizenship Weebly webpage will be a hub for additional information about the
Digital Citizenship Unit, a calendar of planned school and at-home events and resources.
Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions. Working together we can prepare our
kids to think critically and use technology in a safe and responsible way.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Simonovski
