Hydraulic System Design, Selection and Maintenance

This document discusses hydraulic system design and component selection. It provides instructions on how to [1] draw a hydraulic circuit to represent a given figure, [2] select appropriate system pressures and components by researching similar industrial systems, and [3] choose the correct hydraulic filter by determining system operating pressures and flows, selecting a filter housing, and considering additional application factors. The document also involves [4] costing the hydraulic system and discussing system maintenance. Additionally, it prompts comparing hydraulic and pneumatic systems in detail regarding their main components, applications, costs, and maintenance requirements.

Hydraulic System Design

Objective

To determine identify the graphic symbols for various types of hydraulic components. Explain various
hydraulic circuits, importance of filtration and generic component selection for a hydraulic system.

Exercise A: Hydraulic Filter Selection [70 marks]

Task 1. Identify an engineering program and use it to clearly draw a hydraulic circuit to represent the system
presented in figure 1.

Figure 1.
Task 2: Component Selection

Identify similar systems to figure 1 in the industry to help you decide on the system pressures that will enable
you to follow steps 1 - 4 below. Provide all evidence highlighting exactly your selection from your evidence
documentation.
Sensitive hydraulic circuits are vulnerable to a variety of contaminants that result in inefficiency, downtime
and excessive repair costs. It is important to remember that protecting and maintaining the most sensitive
components within a circuit will result in effective contamination control.
With the broad range of housing styles and filters available, how do you choose the right filter to reliably
protect your systems and equipment?
Follow these recommended steps to identify the correct filter and parts required for efficient contamination
control:

1. Determine the system operating pressure and flow rate:

Start by identifying two key factors in the hydraulic system operating environment for the most critical
component being protected, such as pumps and motors.
 Nominal and maximum operating pressure
 Nominal and maximum flow rate

2. Select the filter housing model:

- Refer to the Hydraulic Filter Model Series Selection Guide to select the filter housing that meets
your requirements (choose a manufacturer of your choice).
 Pressure families are color coded for low, medium and high models.
 Housing styles are identified by their shape code: spin-on, in-tank and in-line
 Porting type options

3. Consider application factors when selecting the filter:

- After the appropriate housing is identified, other application factors must be considered when
selecting the appropriate filter. Use the filter choice tables to determine a specific part number.
 Components being protected
 Vibration/cyclic flow surges
 Efficiency / beta rating
 ISO Code desired
 Media type
 seal options
 Fluid type and material compatibility
 Flow rate (GPM/LPM)
 Standard vs. high-performance filters
 Oil viscosity (SUS/cSt) and temperature
 Maximum allowable pressure drop
 Servicing and installation convenience

4. Choose the appropriate line and reservoir accessories

- Items such as breathers, suction strainers, and gauges are important parts of an overall hydraulic
system.

Task 3: Cost your system

- Supply a quotation for your system detailing each component pricing and the total system cost.

Task 4: Maintenance

- Discuss hydraulic system maintenance in details

Exercise B: Hydraulics vs Pneumatics [30 marks approximately 4 pages section and

may include fully labelled diagrams]

Compare the Hydraulics to Pneumatics systems in details. Your comparison should comparing the main
components that make up each system, the applications of each system, cost and maintenance.
