Indefinite article (A/An) - Used when a noun is newly introduced
How to use ‘a/an’? Example: Upon coming out of my house, I saw a dog.1
- Cannot be used before plural nouns
Example: a cookies, a plants, an oranges ✕
- Cannot be used for non-count nouns
Example: a happiness, an air, a quietness ✕
Definite article (the) - Used when a noun is previously introduced
How to use ‘the’? Example: Suddenly, the dog barked at me. 2
- Must always be present before ordinals
Example: the first, the second, the last
- Some nouns require ‘the’ always
Example: the kitchen, the bathroom
Idiomatic use of ‘the’ - Uses of ‘the’ that are not covered by the rules
Example: the sun, the office, the Ritz-Carlton
Summary: In many cases, nouns need to have determiners. Articles are small but
important words, that precede nouns, and by using them correctly you will truly
distinguish yourself as a good English speaker.
