Grade 7 Mathematics Week 1 Lesson 1

The document is a lesson plan for a 7th grade mathematics class on number theory. It covers the following topics: 1) Different types of numbers including natural numbers, whole numbers, integers, rational numbers, irrational numbers, and real numbers. 2) Properties of prime numbers, composite numbers, odd numbers, and even numbers. 3) Examples of sequences and how a number line can be used to display integers and assist with addition and subtraction of signed numbers. 4) A review section asks students to identify types of numbers that can have more than two factors, what type of numbers are shown on a number line, and what integers are made up of.

SECONDARY ENGAGEMENT PROGRAMME

SEPTEMBER 2020 (TERM 1)

GRADE: 7 SUBJECT: MATHEMATICS

WEEK 1

LESSON #1

TOPIC: Number Theory

SUB-TOPIC: Types of numbers

OBJECTIVES

Students will:

 Identify the different set of numbers.

 Order and compare numbers on the number line.
 Identify patters in sequence

CONTENT

No. Types of Numbers Definition Example

1 Natural Numbers Another name for counting numbers, N = {1, 2, 3, ……}
beginning from 1.
2 Whole Numbers The set of natural numbers and zero. W= {0, 1, 2, 3, ……..}
3 Integers The set of positive and negative natural Z = {…-3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3,…}
numbers and zero
4 Rational Numbers The set of numbers that can be written 2 1 3 8 10
− ,− , , ,
3 2 5 9 1
as a fraction. It also contains the set of
integers.
5 Irrational Numbers The set of numbers that cannot be −√3, √7
written as afraction.
6 Real Numbers The set of rational and irrational R = {− , √7}
numbers.

2
7 Prime Numbers Numbers which can be divided exactly {2, 3, 17,31}
only by itself and 1.
8 Composite Numbers A number which has other factors other {4, 12, 21, 27}
than itself and 1.
9 Odd Numbers The set of natural numbers that cannot {1, 7, 25, 29}
be exactly divided by 2.
10 Even Numbers The set of natural numbers that can be {2, 8, 26, 30}
exactly divided by 2.

A sequence of numbers is a set of numbers separated by commas, that follows a mathematical

rule. Each number in the sequence is called a term.
Example: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9…….. Here the mathematical rule is n + 2

The number line displays the infinite value of both positive and negative numbers (Integers). The
left of the number line represents the least value, while the right represents the highest value.
The number line also helps when adding and subtracting directed numbers.

NB:
 1 is not a prime number;
 2 is the only even prime number
