form. Doing so constitutes a copyright violation.
The exam consists of 10 multiple choice/calculation questions and 3 long answer problems. The first
part is a series of 10 single point multiple choice/calculation questions followed by 3 long answer
questions. Long answer questions should be answered on this exam paper in the space provided and
uploaded on cuLearn in PDF format. Attempt all questions. Total marks for the exam is 40.
The solution must be clearly indicated. Multiple solutions or solutions that are not clearly identified
will be marked incorrect. Clearly state all assumptions made. For AC questions assume voltages
and currents are rms unless specified otherwise. In addition, for 3-phase systems, unless
otherwise specified, assume voltages are line-to-line. Clearly mark the units for all final
answers. Clearly indicate axis/units for any graphs. SHOW YOUR WORK!
By signing below you acknowledge and agree to abide by the instructions, rules and regulations
provided herein.

Question 1: [9 marks]

In Fig. Q1.1 the switch is closed for a very long time such
that the circuit has reached steady state. At t=0 the switch is
opened.
a) Determine the capacitance C such that the time constant
τ =50 µs. [3]
b) What is the initial capacitor voltage vc(0+)? [1]
c) What is the final capacitor voltage vc(∞)? [3]
d) Find an expression for vc(t) of the form
k1 + k2exp(-t/τ), for t > 0 [2]

Question 2: [10 marks]

a) Determine the equation for the signal in Fig. Q2.1 over one period and calculate the VRMS
for the signal. [4]

b) If in Fig. Q2.2 Vin is a 12V RMS signal, then determine:

i) The total impedance of the circuit and express in in polar form. [3]
ii) The magnitude of the RMS value of the current I1. [1]
iii) The magnitude of the RMS voltage of Vo. [2]

Question 3: [11 marks]
a) A 60Hz three phase supply feeds a wye system in which each branch has the same load of a
90Ω resistance and an inductance of 0.3H.
i) Sketch the wye system fed by a line voltage and calculate and label the impedance of
the load (in complex notation) in the branches. [1]
ii) Convert the wye to a delta arrangement, redraw and calculate the equivalent load in this
arrangement. [1]
b) A toroidal core has an outer diameter of 1cm, an inner diameter of 0.5cm and is made from
a material with a relative permeability of 1000. Around the circular cross-section of the
toroid ring 20 turns of wire are wrapped and a current of 1mA passes through the wire.
i) Sketch and label the magnetic circuit of the toroid. [1]
ii) Calculate the magnetic flux in the toroid. Be clear in the calculation how any toroid
geometry calculations are made. [3]
iii) A separate secondary winding of 5 turns is now wound around the toroid making a
transformer. If a 12V AC voltage is applied to the original set of turns determine the
voltage at the output of the secondary. [1]
c) A series connected DC motor is to be run at 1500 RPM. The field winding has a total
resistance of 2 Ω and the rotor winding has a resistance of 0.5Ω. Given a current of 12A is
drawn for a required load of 15 Nm torque, determine the power at the input to the motor
under the conditions:
i) No losses in the system. [2]
ii) There are losses due to the copper windings in the motor (assume no rotational
losses). [2]
