Solve what is asked in the problems and box only the finals answer. Provide proper solution for full
credit.

1. A piece of paper lies on the table 3 m away from a point directly below a bulb of 100 cd and is 4
m above the table. Calculate the illumination on the center of the paper in lux.
Solution:

θ = tan−1 ( 43 )
θ = 36.87°
h = √32 + 42 = 5
cos(36.87) 2
E = 100( 5 )
E = 2.55 lx
2.55 lx answer

2. An unshaded lamp is 6 m above the table. It is lowered down by 2.5 m. By how much is the
illumination on the table increased?
Solution:

E af ter daf ter 2

E bef ore = dbef ore 2
62
E= 2.52
E = 5.76 lx
5.76 lx answer

3. A medium unshaded lamp hangs 8 m directly above the table. To what distance should it be
lowered to increase the illumination to 4.5 times its former value?

Solution:

D2
4.5 = d2

82
4.5 = d2

4.5d2 = 82
82
d2 = 4.5

d2 = 14.222

√d 2 = √14.222
d = 3.77 m

3.77 m answer
