SECTION I. THE ASSESSMENT OF COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE (30 points)
Read the text and do the tasks below the text.

Be an Eco-tourist!
1 Would you like to go on a fantastic holiday and protect the planet at the same time? Eco-
tours are a cool way to have fun on holiday and be green at the same time. Although foreign
holidays are exciting, tourism can damage the environment. Ordinary tourists are often
careless and drop litter or damage the places they visit. They do not use marked footpaths,
5 they pick wild flowers and sometimes disturb the wildlife. In poor countries, visitors usually
stay in comfortable, modern hotels where they use up limited water and fuel.
Eco-tourists are more informed about the environment than ordinary tourists. They
follow one golden rule: take only photographs, leave only footprints. They enjoy travelling
to natural areas to observe wild animals and plants and prefer staying in log cabins or tents.
10 Eco-tourists also explore local cultures and help with conservation projects. They use a
more eco-friendly form of transportation such as buses and trains. In some places, they can
even travel by walking or bicycling if the distances are not so long.
An example of eco-tour is a trip to Mount Fuji, where tourists can go hiking in the
hills around the mountain and just relax in a traditional Japanese house. Also, tourists can
15 catch endangered blue butterflies. If they catch one, they should carefully mark an
identification number on its wings before they let it fly away again. It is eco-friendly
because the marks on the butterflies’ wings allow scientists to monitor the population of the
blue butterfly and its natural surroundings.
If tourists decide to go to India, they can visit the Taj Mahal and other historic
20 buildings. Yet, they can go to Ranthambore National Park, which is home to Bengal tigers
as well as leopards and other wild animals. Here in the park, the tigers are protected from
hunters. This tour is eco-friendly because the money tourists pay to enter the park is used to
protect tigers.
Another example of eco-tourism is a journey to the Amazon. Tourists can look down
25 on the rainforest from the 35-metre high walkway. As they walk along the tops of the trees,
they enjoy spectacular views. Tourists stay in rooms made from palm leaves, where there is
no electricity. They can also catch some fish for dinner. This tour helps to raise some money
to save the rainforest and natural resources.
As you can see, there are many ways to take an environmentally friendly journey and 30 be a
responsible traveller at the same time.

SECTION IV. THE ASSESSMENT OF PRAGMATIC AND CIVIC
COMPETENCES (30 points)

Write a 180-200-word coherent text expressing your attitude on the given topic.
1. Some people believe it is important to keep and protect historical buildings. Others 0 0
think it is always better to have more modern buildings around. Which opinion do you 1 1
agree with? Justify your opinion. Present two examples. Use the following plan: 2 2
∙ introduction;
0 0

∙ conclusion. 2 2

Most nations around the world have at least some, or possibly many, old buildings such as 1 1
temples, churches and houses in their cities, villages and surrounding areas which have 2 2
historical significance. In my opinion, it is very important to maintain these, but this does not
0 0
mean progress should stop. 1 1
2 2
Firstly, I believe that it is very important to maintain old buildings because they have historical 3 3
4 4
and cultural significance and economic value. The old buildings may have an important
function in history and some are even the nations’ pride. For instance, the Great Wall of China 0 0
signifies the history of slaves’ perseverance, building the great wall of defence despite severe 1 1
weather conditions, under the tyrannical rule of the Emperor and it also shows the concerns 2 2
over safety during that historical period. 3 3

0 0
On the other hand, Although new buildings may not have historical and cultural significance, 1 1
they do have their purpose, both economically and developmentally. By replacing old 2 2
buildings, there will be more space for housing, which is especially important due to the 0 0
current problem of overcrowding. In doing so, it can guarantee basic living standards. There 1 1
will also be more space for buildings used for educational purposes, as education is important
0 0
for the nations’ growth. 1 1
2 2
In conclusion, I strongly believe that old buildings should not be replaced, not only due to their
3 3
significance to the nation, but also due to the fact that that it doesn’t hinder progress.
