1. Describe your thoughts about this COIL project. Are they mostly positive or negative?
My thoughts about this COIL project was definitely positive even before the beginning of
the program. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for us UST Nursing students to actually
collaborate with our neighboring Asian countries. In a duration of 4 weeks, I am really expecting
that I would learn a lot from them especially on how they respond to public health demands and
having that in mind of course prepare myself every week so that they could learn from me too.
The objectives were explained well and I think it is really feasible given that we have a limited
time to cover all the activities.
2. What were the things that you discovered about other students, their institution, country, or
culture after the first sessions?
During the initial session, I discovered that we almost have the same culture in terms of
how much regard on respect of space and values on our fellow countrymen we have, how we
recognize public health concerns. We have the same mission and vision on how to become a
competent nursing student and how we can prowess excellency in nursing field/profession in
future endeavors.
3. What are the similarities and differences of community health nursing practice in your country
and others?
The similarities in terms of community health nursing practice in my country and other
Asian countries is that we also have the same routine in terms of community diagnosis as we also
begin within the smallest unit of our community and from the initial community assignment, we
began on health screening, identifying the main problem of the community and what we really
need to pay our focus on that day of the duty, ensuring the we prepared the site or health center in
terms of organizing the admission of patients, they also do health education with aid of visuals,
provide exercises and of course evaluate the patient through teach back or return demo.
4. What were the challenges or difficulties that you experienced during the first session? How did
you cope up?
The challenges or difficulties I experienced during the first session was that I am having a hard
time to understand the videos presented by my fellow COIL members from different countries
maybe because of the audio quality but I tried my best to understand it and absorb all the content
they offer since I am very eager to get to know them. The fact that they are also a year level ahead
of us made me a little hesitant of the knowledge and ability I have or if they can actually learn
something from me, but I put my mind to it in a sense that we still differ in terms of the nursing
program we have in USTCON and I think we can learn something from the differences that we
have.
5. What is the most important thing that you learned from the first session that maybe useful for you
or in your future practices as professional nurse?
The most important thing that I learned during the first session that I can highly utilize is
that the power of being able to adapt. As a future professional nurse, with that being said I
became even more motivated to excel in my craft as varying health care needs are waiting for me
after I graduate significantly being flexible, critical and adaptable. Advocating for the healthcare
of the patients and work with them and their families to evaluate which care plan is right for their
situation. The biggest difference is throughout all of the normal nursing duties, we must
constantly be aware of commonly occurring health problems and specialize in working with all
the population in need.
My expectation in the next session is that all of the COIL members would participate
more since we are to begin the planned activity proper and continuously get to know them
personally.
What do you plan to do to meet your personal objectives, and the COIL program objectives?
I plan to prepare more by reading and studying about the topic we have to share and
discuss with our fellow COIL members. I also need to interact with them more by asking
questions and initiating discussions just so we could understand and appreciate more the topic
and seize the opportunity and platform to connect with them given for that day.
