Course (Elective): Commercial Bank Management (CBM) Credits: 3.0

Course Instructor: Visiting Faculty

Objectives of the course: To expose the students to the various aspects of the management of
commercial banks.

Pre-requisites (if any.): This course assumes a basic knowledge of Accounting & Finance.

Learning Objectives: Apply to real life situations by understanding and appreciating the role
and functions of Commercial Banks including Deposit Function, Loan (Lending) Function,
Investment Function, Payment & Settlement Function and Other Miscellaneous/Ancillary
Functions; by understanding and appreciating Principles and Practices of Banking as also the
legal and regulatory aspects of Banking operations.

Career Focus: This course will make the students industry ready/marketable to help them find
suitable openings in Banking & NBFCs where they can work from Day One without any training
in varied job profiles like (i) General Banking Operations in Commercial Banks (ii) Retail
Banking & Marketing (both liabilities & assets) (iii) Credit Appraisal Manager or Loan Manager
covering Lending function, Project Appraisal and Finance etc. in Commercial Banks & FIs like
SIDBI, IFCI, SBI Caps etc. (iv) Trade Finance in Commercial Banks/NBFCs (v) Loan functions
of HDFC Ltd. & other Housing Finance Companies like LICHF, SBIHF & DHFL etc. (vi) Bank
Treasury, Investment & Risk Management Function (vii) RBI, NABARD, NHB, EXIM Bank,
ECGC etc. (viii) NBFCs engaged in Asset based financing, Project finance etc. provided they
take the course seriously and sincerely from the beginning.

ongoing banking sector reforms, increasing thrust of the government on Financial Inclusion and
opening up of new commercial banks like IDFC Bank, Bandhan Bank and a host of Payment
Banks and Small Finance Banks Banking Scene in India continues to be hot and potent.
