Objectives:

Overview:
The leaves of the plants are the main organs of photosynthesis. Its broad
surface enables it to absorb the light coming from the sun, which is one of the
primary requirements for photosynthesis. The leaves are also responsible to obtain
another important raw material in the photosynthetic process from the air – carbon
dioxide.
Although most leaves are thin, they are actually made up of different types of
plant cells that are vital for photosynthesis to be effectively carried out. One of the
very important components of every plant cell is the chloroplast. This is the
structure that houses the chlorophyll molecules that collect the light energy from
the sun. The cells that make up the mesophyll layers (upper and lower mesophyll
layers) of the leaves contain about 40 to 200 chloroplasts per cell. These layers are
where photosynthesis mostly occur.
