The New Philippine Geriatric Center: A Proposed Resort-Oriented Geriatric Health Complex Towards Optimistic and Holistic Architecture

The document proposes the development of a new Philippine Geriatric Center to address the growing needs of the country's aging population. It would be a resort-oriented medical complex providing geriatric healthcare, training facilities for health workers, recreational areas, long-term care homes, and research capabilities. The population of seniors in the Philippines is increasing rapidly and will double by 2035, but current geriatric resources and facilities are very limited. The proposed center aims to provide high-quality and holistic care for the elderly while also raising awareness of geriatric issues. It would be ideally located in a rural area to improve access for seniors far from major cities.

THE NEW PHILIPPINE GERIATRIC CENTER: A PROPOSED RESORT-ORIENTED

GERIATRIC HEALTH COMPLEX TOWARDS OPTIMISTIC AND HOLISTIC

ARCHITECTURE

Geriatrics is a branch of medicine that focuses on overall health of elderly through treatment and
prevention of formation of disease and disabilities. As they are vulnerable to degenerative and
communicable infection due to ageing of body’s immune system. For the past decades, the ageing
population in the Philippines is progressively increasing. As a result, professionals and facilities for elders
are in need to manage and to meet the country’s ability in sustaining the healthcare needs of the ageing
population.

According to the Philippine Statistic Authority, in 2002 there were 4.6 million senior citizen. After one
decade, the population grew by 6.5 million or about 6.9 percent of the total population. As of 2018, there
are more than 8 million Filipino elderly and compromising almost 8.2 percent of the total population.
And by 2035 it is expected to balloon to be doubled, that will make up around 11.5 percent of the total
population. Unfortunately, there are around 140 geriatric doctors operating in the country and without
specialized geriatric nurses. Far from the number to cater millions of senior citizen that needs care and
support.

Addition to this, limited and not accessible geriatric services are hindrance in providing a good quality of
life of the ageing population. In the Philippines there are only few and dedicated geriatric facilities and
only one geriatric center however, this one and only geriatric center in the Philippines cannot operate in
full-fledged as it is cannot handle complex cases.

The Proposed New Philippine Geriatric center will be a resort-oriented medical complex, provided with
needed facilities which includes: Training and research facilities, medical laboratories where inspiring
health workers can train properly for the profession. Recreational Park and a home that needs a long term
care. The proposal is ideally for the elderly residing in the rural area of the Philippines, as they are the one
who is distant from the major facilities. The resort-oriented medical health complex creates an optimistic
impact in the psychological, physical and spiritual development of seniors from different walks of life. It
will help to deliver tranquillity and serenity as they are close to the nature and bodies of water. Lastly, the
Proposed New Philippine Geriatric Center will help educate people by means of raising an awareness to
prevent further conflicts in the mental health of the elders.
The culture of taking care of elderly in the Philippines is not a common thing. Senior citizens are the chief
in every community, services and benefits are significant as they contributed wisdom and legacy worthy
to be called as the pillars of the country.
