SOIL MECHANICS
QUIZ NO.2
Direction: Read the problems carefully. Correct answers with NO/WRONG solution shall not be
considered.
I.
1. A granular soil located in a borrow pit is found to have an in situ density of 1985 𝑘𝑔/𝑚3. In
the laboratory, values of maximum density and minimum density are determined as 2100
𝑘𝑔/𝑚3 and 1440 𝑘𝑔/𝑚3 respectively.
Determine:
a. Relative density
b. Void ratio of soil if the maximum and minimum densities indicate void ratios of 0.28 and
0.92.
c. Bulk specific gravity
2. The weight of a soil sample is 220 grams. After drying, it weighs 182 grams. The specific
gravity of soil is 2.70 and has a volume of 120 cc. Determine:
a. Void ratio
b. Water content
c. Degree of saturation
3. A soil sample has void ratio of 0.56 and effective unit weight of 10.65 𝑘𝑁/𝑚3.
Determine:
a. Specific gravity
b. Degree of saturation of the moisture content is 18%
c. Bulk density of the soil
4. A dry sand is placed in a container having a volume of 0.30 𝑓𝑡3. The dry weight of the
sample is 31 lb. Water is carefully added to the container so as not to disturbed the
condition of the sand. When the container is filled, the combined weight of soil plus water
is
38.2 lb.
Determine:
a. Compute the void ratio in the container
b. Compute the specific gravity of the soil particle
c. Determine the dry unit weight
5. A soil sample has a volume of 120 𝑐𝑚3. The wet weight of soil is 217 grams and the dry
weight of soil is 163 grams. Determine:
a. Void ratio
b. Dry unit weight at zero air voids
