Matching Numerals and Objects Lesson Plan

This lesson plan aims to teach preschool students to match quantities with numerals from 1 to 5. Students will read number books, watch a counting video, play an online matching game, and complete a velcro puzzle activity. Their understanding will be assessed using a rubric to determine if students can identify physical numbers, count objects, and match numerals to quantities from 1 to 5. The goal is for students to learn to visually associate numbers with set amounts.

Matching Numerals and Objects Lesson Plan

Concept / Topic: Matching quantities with numerals

Colorado Math Standard (include grade level): Content Area: Mathematics (Preschool Lvl)
Standard #1: Number Sense, Properties, and Operations
Students Can: Match a quantity with a numeral

Lesson Goal(s): To be able to match a quantity with a visual (Example: Match the number 3
with the flashcard that has 3 dots)

·       Required Materials (listed, including technology):

Laminated number matching puzzle – Teacher-Student
·       #1-5 number flash cards
·       Laminated quantity & numeral example
·       Computer:
·    EPIC! Books:
Numbers by Luana Mitten: https://www.getepic.com/app/read/54605
Falling Leaves 1,2,3 by Tracey E. Dils:

·       Projector & white wall

  Anticipatory Set:

After the circle time discussion from reading the books, the children will get into small groups
and watch the YouTube counting video while stopping after each number to talk about what we
see in the video. Then as a class we will play the game on the projector. For the assessment,
during free centers, one teacher will take 3 children at a time to see if they can match the
numbers puzzle. The teacher will then assess the child with the rubric.
Step-By-Step Instructional Procedures:

1.     During circle time count numbers out loud from #1-10 and then present the
presented books to the children, stopping periodically to discuss what is currently
happening in the book. Ask questions during this time also. Questions can be like:

 “Can anyone tell me what number this is?” while pointing at the physical
number.
 “How many “scarecrows” are there?” If the child struggles to answer the
question, count it out with them.

2.     Then, show the visual of numbers with objects and count each object before
you present the number out loud. As you read each number, trace your finger
around the solid number.

3.     Now, go through the flashcards individually and count out each number and
sound out the number as a class. You can either pick a child to do it with you or
everyone can do it as a class.

Student Practice Activity: Online game

For this activity, connect the computer to the projector facing the white wall and open the link
for the online math game.

For each slide, mix up the solutions.

For example:

 When finding the physical number: count each object out loud, then pick a child to see if
they can tell you which one is the physical number.
 When finding the object number: pick a child to see if they can identify a number to find
the object to. Once they identify a number, pick another child to see if they can find the
correct window. When they select their window, count out the objects together as you
figure out if it is correct or not.
 Picking 2 children per number should allow each child to participate *Class size:10*

When the game is finished, talk with about how they liked the game:

 Did everyone enjoy that game?

 Does everyone feel like they’re ready to do it on their own?

*Questions do not have to be exact but a small cool down before the transition is expected*

Lesson Closure: Matching object & number puzzle

In small groups of 3-4 children, give them each a Velcro puzzle to match numbers with objects.

Allow them to work through it while you observe, give a little guidance but remember, this is
objective to check for the learning goal.
