Small Talk script

SITUATION 1

You meet a colleague who has just returned from a one-month medical leave. You
inform him/her that an official from the company headquarters in Japan is coming for
the launching of a new product. Both of you discuss the preparations for his visit and
his role during the product launch.

SITUATION 2

A new colleague is having breakfast alone in the cafeteria and you join him/her. You
ask how he/she is adjusting to the new work environment. He/she asks for your
advice on how to handle a work assignment.

SITUATION 3

You and a colleague are having tea break at the staff recreation room. You notice
that the place looks messy and is not fully utilised. Both of you discuss ideas to
improve the room to make it a welcoming place for staff to de-stress and socialise
with fellow co-workers.

One of your colleagues has been absent from work frequently. This has affected the
work progress of an ongoing project. As the project leader, you ask the team
members how their work has been affected and what needs to be done to address
the issue.

SITUATION 1

At the office lobby, you meet a colleague who has just made a project presentation to
the department. Your colleague received a lot of positive feedback. Congratulate
him/her on a job well done. As you have to make a presentation next week, you ask
him/her for tips on how to deliver a good presentation.

SITUATION 2

A new colleague is sitting at his/her workstation. Welcome him/her to the department.


You invite this colleague to join you and some other members of the department for
lunch. He/she declines your invitation explaining that it is difficult for him/her to
mingle with others. Discuss the problem and suggest ways to help this colleague
overcome his/her shyness.

SITUATION 3

You bump into your colleague at the office pantry. Your colleague is sporting a new
hair style. Compliment him/her. Both of you notice that the cleanliness of the office
pantry is poor due to several inconsiderate office colleagues. Describe the effects of
this inconsiderate behavior and suggest ways to improve the cleanliness of the
pantry.

SITUATION 4

At the cafeteria your colleague from a different department informs you that his/her
father passed away a month ago. Extend your condolences. Your colleague had to
look after his/her sick father and this affected his/her work performance. Discuss
ways to help your colleague perform better at work.

SITUATION 5
You meet a colleague at the office lobby. He/she looks pale. You enquire about
his/her health. Your colleague complains that a newly appointed staff has been rude
to him/her on several occasions causing your colleague to lose his/her temper.
Discuss how your colleague can handle the situation.

SITUATION 6

You are an hour late to meet two other colleagues to discuss an ongoing project.
Apologise for your tardiness. Your colleagues complain that work progress has been
slow because junior staff members display poor work ethics. Discuss ways to get the
junior staff to be more responsible towards the project.
