River Pollution O2 Conc

The biologist collected water samples from 5 sites along a river and conducted a blue dye test on each sample. The dye faded fastest at site 3, within 30 minutes, indicating very high bacteria levels and a very low oxygen level, making it the most polluted site. The dye faded slowest at sites 1 and 5, not changing after 7 days, showing them to be the least polluted with very low bacteria and high oxygen.

River Pollution – Problem Solving

A biologist collected water samples from the sites shown in the diagram below. They carried out the “blue
dye test” on the samples collected. The blue dye turns colourless as the level of oxygen present is used up.
The more bacteria in the water the faster the dye will turn colourless.

4. What do you think is the likely source of the organic pollution in this river?
5. Is there any evidence to suggest that the river recovers from the pollution? Give a reason for your
answer.
