Guest Speaker Chris Wigmore

Chris Wigmore is a freelance creative director who moved into advertising after college. He discussed how the field has changed with the rise of digital and social media. Freelancers now actively seek out clients online instead of waiting for work. Understanding the client, their target audience, and goals is essential to developing effective concepts and ads. While experience in an agency can help build skills, a university education and developing a strong portfolio are also recommended for breaking into the freelance field.

 Went to college but had no direction – went onto a graphic design course and moved to a
advertising firm in Bristol - built a career as a creative director – a freelance works wherever
there is work – has to work on digital as well – have to think more social media now – online
ads and social – struggled to start with but has worked towards a better understanding –
good way for clients to get work across alongside traditional methods
 More people are going to them instead of them going to the client, getting business out and
digital to get work - digital is better for getting clients – more and more people are going
digital – especially during covid – getting work and knowledge of company out. Can used
social media to start interacting with clients or getting clients attention.
 Starting to work clients – important to understand what the product is aimed for – identify
problems and match it with what you're going to do to solve it – have to get the view of the
company across - have to understand what the clients target audience and are to accurately
get the product across – have to understand what the client stands for and what the
message they want to get across is. - look at the interest of the costumer – what their life is
and what they want out of life – get a customer persona – the ideal target costumer
 Does the product answer the brief and strategy – the view of the advert is what the client
wants, and does it fit the brief and product – can have input but needs to answer he brief
 Concepts for ads have no magic bullet – needs to be creative – starts with a box and pad and
paper – have to fill box – helps to give a starting point and what an initial idea could be -
does the idea fit the idea and will it sell - finding the right headspace and finding how you
can make it interesting
 They didn’t go into university – but would recommend going to university – more and more
people are looking for university grads - look into gain more digital skills and social media –
can be used to get work seen by more people.
 First thing that is looked at is if the client is business to business or business to customer
public
 Get a job at a company before you start to freelance – build skill and experience – can get a
better understanding on how to work with clients and meet briefs – need experience to get
better work - build up a portfolio - can be freelance and work in a business at the same time
 Make a portfolio – get it working and start looking for things you can do
 Look at other people work, and wat companies are producing – look at what is in demand
and how you can change or do what is popular. Follow companies you want to work with
and engage with them.
 Does your cv or portfolio reflect you – your strengths and what you're interested in
 Very thing has to be more careful with budgets/clients budgets
