5) ASTM A29 GR 4140 PDF

This document summarizes the material properties of ASTM A29 Grade 4140 steel. It lists equivalent international grades, its chemical composition ranges, mechanical properties including tensile strength, yield strength and elongation. The document also describes the heat treatment process of heating it to 1550°F and quenching in oil to harden it, and that it can be welded using conventional methods but may require post weld heat treatment if welded in the heat treated condition.

Material Data Sheet

ASTM A29 Grade 4140

Equivalent International steel grades:

ISO 683/18
JIS G4404
DIN 1.7225
BS EN19

Material group: Through hardening steel

Chemical Composition

C Si Mn Cr S P Mo

Typical Analysis in % Min 0.38 0.15 0.75 0.80 _ _ 0.15

Max 0.43 0.35 1.0 1.10 0.04 0.035 0.25

Mechanical Properties:

Tensile Strength 655 MPa / 95000 psi

Yield Strength (MPa) 415 MPa / 60200 psi
Elongation (%) 25.7% in 50 mm

Heat Treatment: This alloy is hardened by heating to 1550 F and quenching in oil. It is best to
normalize the alloy by heating at 1675 F for a long enough time to permit through heating, followed by air
cooling, prior to the hardening treatment. Hardness: 92 HB

Welding: It is weldable of the conventional methods. Welding with the alloy in the heat-treated
condition will affect the mechanical properties and a post weld heat treatment may be required.
