BRIEF INTRODUCTION

The human respiratory system functions in the exchange of oxygen and carbon
dioxide between the cells of the body and the external environment. This function is
known as respiration. The respiratory system works with the circulatory system in
ensuring the body cells to get oxygen and rid-off carbon dioxide. The circulatory system
transports oxygen and carbon dioxide while the respiratory system serves as the site of gas
exchange. The respiratory system consists of the lungs and air passageways that include
nostrils, nasal cavity, larynx, trachea, bronchi (sing. bronchus), and alveoli (sing. alveolus).

REMEMBER
The respiratory system is the organ system that is responsible for

from respiration. Breathing is the mechanical process of inhalation (or inspiration) and
exhalation (or expiration). Respiration is the chemical process that involves the exchange of
oxygen and carbon dioxide in the cells.

BRIEF INTRODUCTION
The human circulatory system is composed of the three
main organs: heart, blood, and blood vessels. The main
tasks of the circulatory system are the following:
1. Delivers nutrients and oxygen to the different body cells and
removes various metabolic waste products such as carbon
dioxide.
2. Brings hormones, chemical messengers of the body, to their
target tissues or organs.
3. Defends the body against foreign matters.

Blood flows in the body in three main circulation pathways: the

systemic circulation (carries oxygenated or oxygen-rich blood), the
pulmonary circulation (carries blood between the heart and lungs), and
the coronary circulation (movement of blood in the heart).

ACTIVITIES
Activity 2.1 Getting to Know the Components of the Circulatory System
Objective: Identify the components of the circulatory system.
Materials: science book, diagram of the circulatory system
Procedure
1. Read the following paragraph about the circulatory system.
2. Using the information given, fill in the missing parts, descriptions, and functions to
complete the graphic organizer. Write your answers on your answer sheet.

The Circulatory system carries nutrients to the cells of the body, wastes away from
cells and hormones to the target cells or tissues. It helps fight disease-carrying
organisms. The main components of the circulatory system are the heart, blood
and blood vessels. The heart pumps the blood which carries gases, nutrients,
wastes, and hormones. Inside the heart are four chambers. Each chamber is a little
pump that pushes the blood through the body. It takes 1-2 minutes for blood to
circulate all around your body. Blood circulates in three main pathways - pulmonary
circulation (blood travels from the heart to the lungs and returns to the heart),
systemic circulation (blood travels from the heart to the different parts of the body
and returns to the heart), and coronary circulation (moves blood through the
tissues of the heart). The blood vessels are smooth tissues which serve as
passageways for blood. There are three types of blood vessels, namely, arteries,
veins and capillaries. Arteries carry oxygen-rich blood away from the heart, while
veins carry oxygen-poor blood back to the heart. The capillaries are the sites of gas
exchange.

Rolando is breathing rapidly and gasping for breath. Why does Rolando's breathing rate
increase? Why does he grasp?

10
REMEMBER
The circulatory system is composed of three parts: the heart, blood, and blood
vessels. The heart pumps oxygen-poor (deoxygenated blood) through the pulmonary circuit and
oxygen-rich blood (oxygenated blood) through the systemic circuit. While the movement of
blood in the tissues of the heart is through the coronary circuit. The blood carries nutrients,
gases, and hormones that pass through different blood vessels namely, arteries, veins, and
capillaries.
