1. Create a formal diagram for Hymn no. 81, “Press Forward, Saints,” including (a) bubbles for each
phrase, (b) phrase labels (a b c, etc.); (c) cadence labels at the end of each phrase (PAC, IAC, HC,
etc.); (d) upper-level grouping bubbles for periods; (e) a name for the overall form

2. Listen* to mm. 1-57 of Haydn’s Octet for Winds (Anthology no. 12 in the textbook**, beginning
on page 347) and do the following:

a. There are two clear period structures in this opening section – one in the tonic and one in the
dominant. Find them and create phrase form diagrams for both of them on the back side of this
page (again, include bubbles, labels, cadences, and an overall description of the period).

b. Find an example of a phrase elision. What measure does it occur in? ______________

c. Find an example of a phrase group. Where is it? Why is it a phrase group and not a period?

d. Find an example of a phrase that has been extended from the standard 4 measures to something
longer. Where is it and how was it extended?

e. Find an example of a phrase that is repeated with variation (and with identical cadences), but
NOT forming part of a period structure. Where is it? _____________________

f. EXTRA MILE: What kind of section begins at m. 50? What is its function?
