SCADA and DCS Overview for Engineers

This document provides an introduction to advanced control systems, specifically SCADA and DCS. It defines SCADA as a system that monitors and controls industrial processes, consisting of HMIs, supervisory computers, RTUs, and PLCs connected via communication infrastructure. The document outlines common SCADA hardware and software. DCS is defined as a distributed control system with many local controllers throughout a plant connected by a high-speed network. The document details typical DCS hardware and software. Key learning outcomes are explained in controlling processes via SCADA and DCS.

Course Outcome
After studying this topic you will be able to
• Explain the scheme of SCADA
• State the hardware and softwares used in SCADA
• Explain the scheme of DCS
• State the hardware and softwares used in DCS

SCADA
• SCADA stands for supervisory control and data
acquisition. It generally refers to an industrial
control system i.e. a computer system
monitoring and controlling a process.
•A SCADA System usually consists of the
following subsystems ( Hardware):
•A Human-Machine Interface or HMI is the
apparatus which presents process data to a
human operator, and through this, the human
operator monitors and controls the process.

3
SCADA
•A supervisory (computer) system, gathering
(acquiring) data on the process and sending
commands (control) to the process.
• Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) connecting to
sensors in the process, converting sensor signals to
digital data and sending digital data to the
supervisory system.
• Programmable Logic Controller (PLCs) used as field
devices because they are more economical,
versatile, flexible, and configurable than special-
purpose RTUs.
4
SCADA
• Communication infrastructure connecting the
supervisory system to the Remote Terminal Units.

10
SCADA Hardware
• HMI
• Operating Stations
• PLCs
• Modems / Radio Modems
• RTU (Remote Terminal Unit) :The RTU provides
an interface to the field analog and digital signals
situated at each remote site.

11
SCADA Software
• AB : RSVIEW32
• SIEMENS : WINCC
• WONDERWARE : IN TOUCH
• HONEYWELL : SCAN3000
• GENERAL ELECTRIC : INTELLUTION IFIX
• MODBUS, OPC, Winlog Pro etc.

12
Distributed control System
• A distributed control system (DCS) is a specially
designed automated control system that consists
of geographically distributed control elements
over the plant or control area.
• It differs from the centralized control system
wherein a single controller at central location
handles the control function, but in DCS each
process element or machine or group of machines
is controlled by a dedicated controller.

13
Distributed control System

• DCS consists of a large number of local

controllers in various sections of plant control
area and are connected via a high speed
communication network.
