¿What causes domestic violence?

From many years ago, women have been affected by domestic violence. It wasn’t until
1993 that marital rape was considered a crime in the United States. Domestic violence is
develop by an aggressive behavior commonly produced by men against women. It’s
difficult to say that domestic violence is caused by one reason, because many things
influence in this problem like gender-role identify and family.

The first reason of domestic violence is caused by the family, men are educated to have
the power of control everything in the household including economic choices and
intimate relationship. As a result, men act with violence when their decisions are not
accomplish.

Another reason that influence in domestic violence is gender-role identify. The society
have an image of how men should act and behave in different situations. When you act
with aggression, violence and dominance, it is said that men have an “appropriate
masculine behavior”.

In conclusion, domestic violence is an abusive behavior by men against women, this


type of behave are influence by the family and the society. In the future, we have to take
into account the way we educate the new generation to avoid this kind of attitudes to
repeat through the years.
Domestic Violence
Domestic Violence is a pattern of abusive and coercive behaviors used to maintain
power and control over a former or current intimate partner. Abuse can be emotional,
financial, sexual or physical and can include threats, isolation, and intimidation. Abuse
tends to escalate over time. When someone uses abuse and violence against a partner, it
is always part of a larger pattern of control.

Types of domestic violence


- Using economic abuse: preventing her from getting a job, making her ask for
money, not letting her know about the family income.
- Using Male Privilage: Treating her like a servant, making all the big decisions,
acting like the “master of the castle”
- Using coercion and threats: Threatening to leave her, to commit suicide, making
her drop charges.
- Using Intimidation: Making her afraid by using looks, actions, gesture.
- Using children: Threatening to take the children away.

Causes
Domestic violence is a choice and it is a learned behavior. For these reasons, it is
difficult to say that domestic violence is caused by any one single factor.

 Gender-role identity – Limited definitions of “appropriate masculine behavior”


that glorify aggression, violence, and dominance.

 Family – Messages that men should have the power and make decisions in a
household and/or intimate relationship (e.g. “a man’s home is his castle”)
 Media – Portrayals of women as objects; glorification of violence and violent,
coerced, and non-consensual sex; limited male and female roles.

 Peer group – Social pressure to conform to a limited definition of masculinity,


which centers on devaluing women.

 Sports – Competition, aggression, and dominance are praised. Teammates that


demonstrate sexist and/or abusive behavior are not held accountable.

 Impunity – Many perpetrators do not face any negative repercussions for their
sexist attitudes and abusive behaviors. If they are challenged, their excuses are
accepted (e.g. blaming the behavior on alcohol use, stress, or being provoked by
the victim).
Consequences of domestic violence in women
Physical and psychological violence are the most common effect of domestic violence.
Both are very serious, but the one that can stay for a very long period of time is the
psychological abuse which can mark a woman in every stage of her life. Being
vulnerable to violence leads to a poor physical health overall in comparison with
women who have not experienced this conduct.

Effects of domestic violence in children:


Children and teenagers who grow up in a violent environment are most likely to
develop behavioral problems, such as aggressive and exhibiting out of control behavior.
Furthermore, an imitating way of acting is often done by this children thinking that
violence is an acceptable manner in intimate relationship and become either the abused
or the abuser.

Solutions:
Education is the key for this types of problems in our society. Showing good examples
of care and compassion for our partner is very important when it comes to having
children to not learn bad habits and problems with their way of acting. To women living
this situation to have the courage and raise their voice to let the problem be known on
time, to not let themselves be treated inferior and when the first sign of violence is
shown to address it right way. To the authorities in charge to have jail sentences of a lot
of years and punishment that can make men think about twice before committing
domestic violence.
