l 3rd largest telecom market in the world.
l 2nd largest among emerging economies of Asia
l Additions of 8 million connections per month, highest in the world.
l Broadband target for 2010 - 20 million connections.
l 500 million telephones expected by 2010.
l Requirement of additional investment of US$25 billion.
Indian Telecom Industry is undergoing a very radical change. Growing at an average rate of
more than 40%, the Indian telecom sector has witnessed doubling of revenues in the last
three years. The total numbers of subscribers have the crossed 272 million mark. The great
Indian telecom growth story is showcased from the fact that more than 350 fresh
applications have been received seeking Universal Access Service License (UASL) at the
end of 2007.
The year 2006 saw the Asia/Pacific broadband access services market continue to grow at
a rate close to 2005 forecast. As per one of the Industry Survey report Broadband
subscribers reached 109 million in the 13 major markets in the region, a 26% increase
from 2005. The total market is envisaged to reach 235 million subscribers by 2011. India
too has targeted 20 million broadband connections by 2010. At present there are about
3 million connections.
To encourage the expansion of broadband connectivity at a faster rate, both outdoor and
indoor usage of low power Wi-Fi and WiMAX systems in 2.4GHz-2.4835 GHz band has
been delicensed.
In July, 2006, The Ministry launched the initiative for sharing of cellular infrastructure in
the urban areas starting with Delhi. This initiative includes sharing of cellsites, towers,
to be achieved, out of which 80 million are expected to be in rural
areas. Total telephone connections by December 2007 end were
272.88 million. Mobile telephony is identified by ITU's Report as
the missing link which will bridge the digital divide.
India's teledensity has also shown an improvement. With around
16% last year it has come up to around 23.89% (by December
2007 end), but it is still not sufficient. This figure also indicates
the potential that India has for the telecom companies and their
investments. This can also be seen from the fact that this sector
attracted Rs 3901 cr. (USD 959 million) FDI from April-October
2007 (1US$ = Rs. 39.40 as on 28.01.08)
power backup etc. among the operators to minimize regulatory
delays and operational cost. (Source : DOT Annual Report)
