Revised Classroom Management Plan

Megan Garcia-Gamble
Subject: English
Classroom Rules

As a class, come up with your own classroom rules that you will
all follow throughout the year.

I will pass around scratch paper for each of you to write down
some rules before we discuss as a class.

After this discussion, we will write down our classroom rules on

butcher paper.

Keep in mind: they must be reasonable and school appropriate!

Entering / Exiting the Classroom

Prior to Entering the Classroom

• Students must wait outside quietly before being greeted at the door –
this allows other students from the previous class to exit the room.

Entering the Classroom

• Upon entering the classroom, students must turn their homework into
the correct period homework box before taking their seats and pulling
out any items they need for class.

Exiting the Classroom

• Once class has ended, students my leave the classroom – be mindful
of others and make sure to pick up your trash on the way out and
make sure not to push one another.
Class Agenda / Objective of the Day
The class agenda will be posted on Each day, there will be an objective
the board each day with the following: posted above the class agenda.
It will state what students should be
Ø Today’s date
able to do by the end of the class.
Ø Objective of the Day
Ø Class (outline)
Ø Homework for next class meeting
Ø Important reminders/due dates
Ø Quote of the Day
Turning in Work

Turning in Assignments: The Homework Box

• There will be plastic drawers labeled for each class
period by the door.
• Any assignments due for the day will be placed in the
appropriate tray at the beginning of class.
• I will check the homework drawers at the end of each
day.
Student / Teacher Absences
Student Absence
• Make sure to get class notes from a classmate if you are absent.
• Any Power Point slides or videos that we went over in class will be
posted through Google Classroom or our own class website under the
appropriate folders (Class Lectures & Videos).
• Check the Absent Folder for any handouts/homework.

Teacher Absence
• For any reason I am out of class, you will have a sub.
• I will leave notes for the sub on what you will be doing that day.
• I expect that you treat the sub the same way you treat any other
teacher and make sure to listen to any instructions or directions that
he or she may give you.
Absent Work

Absent Work
• There is a crate next to the homework box labeled
for absences with a folder for each class period.
• If you are absent for any reason, look in the
appropriate class period for any papers that may
have been passed out yesterday.
Ø any papers in the folder will be marked
with your name on them – make sure to
only take the paper(s) with your name on
them
• You will have up to two (2) class days to submit any
absent work to the homework box.
Passing Back Work

Distributing Papers
• Any papers that are passed out in class will be given
to row/group leaders before they are passed down
the rows or to the group.

Passing Back Graded Work

• Graded work will be kept in file folders by period.
When work needs to be passed back, I will pass back
work or have volunteers pass them out.
• If you pass out work to your classmates, I expect you
do so quietly and keep other’s scores confidential.
Bathroom Policies

Bathroom Policies
• You may used the restroom when needed during
class.
• I ask that you take the bathroom pass before you
leave the room and write down your name on the
white board near the door with the time you are
leaving class.
• Be courteous and respectful of other classes
when you are in the hallways.
• Only one (1) student may be out of the room at a
time.
Cell Phones / Personal Tech
Cell Phones
• Your cell phone should be turned on silent or turned off and put
away throughout the class period.
• If I see you on your phone, you will get one (1) warning. After that, I
will confiscate your device until the end of the class period.

Personal Technology
• The only devices you are allowed to have out during the class period
are your Chromebooks (when needed).
• Other than that, all other types of electronics need to be put away in
your backpacks.
Food and Drink Policies
Food
• You may eat in the classroom as long as you keep your desk
clean and pick up your trash after, making sure to throw away any
wrappers in the trash bins.
• If you do make a mess, be sure to clean it up so we don’t get any
pests in the room and to make sure our classroom is clean.
• If we use computers, I ask you keep all food stashed away to keep
it clean.

Drinks
• I do not mind if you have drinks in class unless they are resealable
– they must have a cap, or you can bring a reusable container.
• If you bring in a drink that is not resealable, I ask that you set it
aside during class to prevent it from spilling.
Emergencies / Natural Disasters

Fires
• Follow the school procedures in case of a fire.
• Leave your backpacks and exit the classroom in an
orderly fashion to our designated area outside.

Earthquakes
• Follow the school procedures in case of an earthquake.
• When an earthquake hits, stop what you are doing and
take cover under your desk, covering the back of your
neck until it is over. We will then leave the class in an
orderly fashion to our designated area.
Emergencies / Natural Disasters

Lock Downs
• In case of a lock down, we will follow the school
procedures.
• I will lock the classroom door and turn off the lights.
• I ask that you refrain from talking loudly.
• There will be an first-aid kit and a lock down kit located
in a cabinet by my desk.
• I will also keep snacks and water in these cabinets
meant for lock downs.
Classroom Library

Checking Out Books

• You may borrow any book from the classroom
library.
• First, you must check the book out. There is a binder
with tabs for each class period. Find the appropriate
section and fill out the form: your name, the name of
the book, the author’s last name, and the date you
checked the book out.
• Please take care of my books like you would ones
from the school library.
• You may only check out one (1) book at a time.
Classroom Library

Checking Books Back In

• When returning a book, you must fill out the Book
Return Slip. They are in a container beside the Check
Out Binder.
• You must fill out the book return slip appropriately:
your name, the name of the book, the author, and
date, then you must put the slip in the front cover of
the book and place in the green basket next to the
bookshelf.
• Please do not return any books to the bookshelf on
your own, otherwise I will think you still have the book
with you.
Calling Class to Order

Attention Grabber
• In order to get your attention during class, I will use a
small bell.
• When I ring the bell, I expect the class to be respectful
by giving me your full attention, which means facing
forward in your seat, eyes on me, and no talking to
your neighbors.

During Class Activities

• During group work, I will use the bell as a signal to let
you know how much time you have left to work, if I
need to give you information, or when you need to
rotate groups (depending on the activity).
Classroom Items

At the back of the classroom there is a desk with

containers that contain: pencils, pens,
highlighters, scissors, and glue sticks.
You may use these when you need to do so,
however, after you use them please put them
back in their proper container so your other
classmates may use them.

Around the classroom there are staplers and hole punchers for when you need them. Please
only use them before or after class or when we have some free time.

Keep in mind: When you need to use one of these items in the classroom be courteous of your
classmates and not be disruptive of our learning.
Classroom Items

For when you are sick or have allergies:

• Around the classroom there are boxes of
tissues and hand sanitizer. Be gentle with the
hand sanitizer and only take what you need.

Teacher Desk
• Please do not take any of the items on my
desk without permission.
• I may have important papers or items on my
desk that may need to be passed out, copied,
etc.
Class Circles
Regular Class Circles
Class circles will occur every other Friday at the start of class. During the
se circles, everyone will have the opportunity to share: thoughts about
what is or is not working well in class, any questions you may have, any
issues that need to be addressed, etc.
During these circles I ask that you listen to your peers, speak one at a
time, and respect one another.

Impromptu Class Circles

There will be times when something may occur that can impact us. In the
event of something happening at the school, within the community, or
nation/worldwide, we will hold an impromptu class circle where we can
come together and share our thoughts as a class.
Class Discussions

On occasion, we will have class discussions, like Socratic

seminars, to discuss novels and other literary work as a class.
During these times, I ask that you follow these rules:
1. Only one speaker at a time.
2. Listen to your classmates’ thoughts/responses.
3. Be respectful and kind towards one another, even if you
disagree with someone’s statements.
4. Use positive and appropriate language during discussions.
5. Work together and have fun!
Groups

Table Groups
Class seating will be set up in table groups with four (4) students
per group. Group partners are chosen at random and these groups
will change after each grading period.

Throughout the grading period, you will work

with your group partners in class to
accomplish various activities and work
together on assignments, projects, etc.
You will all work as a team and
collaborate with each other so we are
all successful.
Teacher Drop-Box

Near my desk there will be a Drop-Box for you to

use. You may use it to ask questions, raise
concerns you may have, suggest something you
would like to see in class, or anything that you
may want to tell me.
You may keep it anonymous if you’d like to.
Please feel free and welcome to use the Drop-Box
if needed. I will keep anything you said
confidential.
There will be cards and pens beside the Drop-Box
for you to write on.
Good Things

Each Monday as a class we will share Good Things.

You may share anything that has happened over the
past week that you want to talk about with the class.
You do not have to share if you do not want to.
When someone is sharing a good thing, please be
respectful and kind to your peers and listen to them as
they speak. We want our classroom to be a safe and
open space for all students.
Final Thoughts
Remember to always use positive language in the
classroom and follow these rules:
1. Take care of yourself.
2. Take care of each other.
3. Take care of this place.

Let’s all work together, always be respectful to

each other, and treat one another the way you
would like to be treated.
