“What is the relevance or significance of Jose Rizal’s writings in relation to Philippine

society, culture, history, economics and politics?

Jose Rizal is our national hero in the Philippines. He was born on June 19th, 1861 in
Calamba, Philippines to a middle class family in the Province of Laguna. His parents were
Francisco Mercado and Teodora Alonzo. Jose was also the seventh child of their eleven
children. Throughout his life, Rizal fought to free the Philippines from Spain. He was known
as a poet, an educator, and a journalist. He was also Asia’s first modern non-violent political
leader. Jose even has his own special holiday, "Rizal Day," which is celebrated on the
anniversary of his death. Jose was very smart; he mastered 23 languages, knew how to work
20 different jobs, and actually studied medicine because his mother was going blind. He later
became an eye surgeon.
The role of Jose Rizal when he while writing the veracity of the Philippine economic and
situation during his era, he created and expressed his feelings through artworks, sculptures,
quotes and writings. They said Filipino youth is the key for the next generation of our society.
In Nation University- Manila, as one of the student the core values are important to
implement and establish to become the future responsible citizen. The core values are
integrity, compassion, innovation, industry, respect, resilience and patriotism,

“Ang hindi magmahal sa sariling wika, daig pa ang hayop at malansang

isda.”– Jose Rizal

Jose Rizal said to his famous quote, if you do not love your own race or country, you are
worst more than the animals and stinky fish. The message of this is we should love and
support our country. We must cherish and promote the local products and items to help our
fellow citizens especially who are living in a rural place those are the local farmers, fishers
and etc.

During class every Friday with four hour class when we had lectures and activities we are not
just learning from our beloved Professor Francis but he also encouraged us to put in our mind
and heart the impact of the history and contributions of each heroes. The best part after the
discussion is the activities, when we had groupings, each of us should be participated like
when we are playing charade to guess the words. My point of view, we are not just learning
but it also remarkable in our mind and heart the lessons we’ve been learned throughout the
semester.

As a Nationalian student, I should be responsible to all of my actions. This is the core values
brought to me to be leader and love my own country. When I was a young, my parents taught
me to be always kind and respectful not just to elderlies but also to other people. I’ve been
learning the other things when I while growing and encountering different circumstances.

“The youth is the hope of our future.”-Jose Rizal

Our National hero believes that the hope of our future is the next generation or those youth
today who are playing the roles to be responsible and leader someday of the government.
Therefore, in this synthesis paper I want to summarize the lessons and discussion when I had
the subject of Life and Works of Rizal.
