Special Considerations for
Windows Vista
Windows Vista enforces tighter file and registry policies. This prevents some
files and settings from being applied unless you use Administrator privileges.
As a best-practice, do not save user-created files (templates, configuration
files, model files, and so forth) in the Program Files area. Instead, use the
user-specific folders for storing files.
If the program fails to function as expected, run the program as an
Administrator (right-click the icon, and choose Run as Administrator) to
work around the issue.

Note: The following task must be performed while logged on as an

Administrator, as a one-time procedure:
 When downloading the Aspen Web.21 plot controls from Aspen Production
Control Web Server (on an Internet Explorer client machine).

Special Considerations for

Windows Server 2008
On Windows Server 2008, you will need to run some programs using elevated
privileges (that is, Run As Administrator).
If the program fails to function as expected, run the program as Administrator
(right-click the icon, and choose Run as Administrator) to work around the
issue. Alternatively, consider turning off the UAC, or User Account Control,
feature to avoid these issues completely.

Note: Programs that require Administrator rights are:

 Aspen DMCplus Manage, Aspen Apollo Manage (in Aspen Nonlinear
Controller), and Aspen IQmanage (in Aspen Inferential Qualities).
 Install Database Configuration procedure for Aspen Watch or Aspen RTO
Watch.
 Microsoft Internet Explorer, when accessing the Aspen Production Control
Web Server on the local Windows Server 2008 / Aspen Production Control
Web Server only.
 When downloading the Aspen Web.21 plot controls from Aspen Production
Control Web Server (on an Internet Explorer client machine).

The following programs are configured to Run as Administrator automatically,

and they prompt the user for permission to continue when launching:
 Aspen APC Manage.
 Configure Online Server utility for Aspen Process Controller.

Aspen Manufacturing Suite Advanced Process Control V7.3 Release Notes 3

Installing AMS Advanced
Process Control Products
The following items describe installing for the first time or upgrading to the
V7.3 versions.
 The AMS Advanced Process Control software is distributed on aspenONE
DVD 2, which is delivered as part of the aspenONE release.
Important: See the next section, "Aspen Manufacturing and Supply
Chain - Two DVDs."
 The aspenONE release requires Software License Manager (SLM) V7.3, or
later, to perform installation and run-time license checking. AMS Advanced
Process Control products will not run without the proper license keys
installed on an SLM server.
 Do not attempt to install Aspen Nonlinear Controller (online server), Aspen
DMCplus Controller (online server), or Aspen IQ (online server) software
on the Aspen Watch Server or Aspen RTO Watch Server computer.
AspenTech recommends that Aspen Watch or Aspen RTO Watch be
installed on a separate dedicated server computer. An additional dedicated
computer should also be used for installation of the Aspen Production
Control Web Server software. For more information regarding typical
computer configurations for AMS Advanced Process Control software see
Appendix B of the Aspen Manufacturing Suite Advanced Process Control
Installation Guide.
 It is possible for multiple versions of the Desktop software products to co-
exist on the same computer. You can also use the current version of
Desktop products with older versions of the Online products. For additional
information, see the AspenTech support web site, Knowledge Base article
number 111900, at http://support.aspentech.com.
 There are several dependencies between the Online software products,
and additional integration between the AMS Information Management
components and Watch Server and Web Server products. When installing
or upgrading AMS Advanced Process Control products, you must also
install the associated dependent products. For a list of all AMS Advanced
Process Control product dependencies, see Appendix A of the Aspen
Manufacturing Suite Advanced Process Control Installation Guide.

Aspen Manufacturing and Supply Chain –

Two DVDs
With the release of V7.3, there are now two versions of the Aspen

licensing models used by AspenTech. The two DVDs are labeled Aspen
Manufacturing and Supply Chain DVD 2 and Aspen Manufacturing and Supply
Chain DVD 2T.

4 Aspen Manufacturing Suite Advanced Process Control V7.3 Release Notes

Aspen Manufacturing and Supply Chain DVD 2
DVD 2 contains the media that supports perpetual and pre-aspenONE
Licensing Model token-based systems. If you have perpetual license
agreements or token-based license agreements by product (pre-July 2009),
you should use the DVD labeled Aspen Manufacturing and Supply Chain DVD
2. The majority of customers are in this category. Software installed from this
DVD requires older license keys that have been in use since the aspenONE
2004 release.

Aspen Manufacturing and Supply Chain DVD 2T

DVD 2T contains the media that supports the aspenONE Licensing Model
token-based system. This new all-inclusive token-based licensing model was
introduced in July 2009. Under this licensing model, customers are entitled to
install and run all of AspenTech's Manufacturing and Supply Chain products as
long as they have purchased sufficient tokens. To install software purchased
under this commercial agreement, use the DVD labeled Aspen Manufacturing
and Supply Chain DVD 2T. Software installed from this DVD requires run-time
token-based license keys.

aspenONE Licensing Model

The aspenONE Licensing Model is a flexible token-based approach to software
licensing. This unique and innovative commercial model makes it easier for
customers to use software when and where they need it. Customers have
access to all current and future AspenTech products with just one contract.

Upgrading to the aspenONE Licensing Model for

Manufacturing and Supply Chain V7.3
If you have recently purchased a new aspenONE Licensing Model agreement,
or if you have superseded an old license agreement with an aspenONE
Licensing Model token-based license agreement for aspenONE Manufacturing
and Supply Chain, you will receive a new token-based license file for V7.3,
and you should use the Aspen Manufacturing and Supply Chain DVD 2T.
During installation of any product in Aspen Manufacturing and Supply Chain,
you will get a message indicating that the newly installed software will use
the token-based license key. Accepting the warning message enables you to
install the software.

Verifying existence of Manufacturing and Supply Chain

V7.3 License Keys for aspenONE Licensing Model
The installation on the DVD labeled Aspen Manufacturing and Supply Chain
DVD 2T will check for a unique license key (SLM_IN_FNC_MSCTKUTL) that
indicates the purchase of the aspenONE Licensing Model for V7.3. You can
work with your AspenTech account manager to verify your commercial
agreements or with Customer Support to determine whether this key is
available on the license server. (See Note, next.)

Aspen Manufacturing Suite Advanced Process Control V7.3 Release Notes 5

New Features

This section describes the new features in Aspen Manufacturing Suite (AMS)
Advanced Process Control V7.3.

APC Online
Latched messages display in Aspen APC
Manage
A table with the title "Messages (Pending)" now appears in the Messages tab
whenever one or more latched messages are active. A check box option
enables you to suppress the display of this new table, if desired.

Suppress messages from APC Online

applications
Application administrators now have the ability to suppress certain messages
for a specific online application or a specific variable within the application /
controller.
This new feature was added because, at times, the configuration of an online
application or the process conditions cause repetitive message generation.
The new message suppression feature can help prevent such messages from
inundating the message subsystem.
For instructions and more information, see the Help topic "Message
Suppression" in the "Web Interface Customizations" section of the Aspen
Production Control Web Server WebHelp.

New Message Log Service for APC Online

applications
Online messages from Aspen DMCplus, Aspen IQ and Aspen Nonlinear
Controller applications are now stored in a custom Windows™ event log. A
new Aspen APC Message Log Service receives all messages from the online

Aspen Manufacturing Suite Advanced Process Control V7.3 Release Notes 7

applications. This service manages the persistence of the messages by storing
them in the event log. It also maintains an in-memory cache of messages and
publishes them to be viewed by using Aspen Production Control Web Server
or Aspen APC Manage.
Users can configure the number of messages held in memory by using a
configuration file. Users can also independently configure the disk file size of
custom event logs corresponding to each product.
Nonlinear applications will now have persistent storage of online messages
similar to Aspen DMCplus and Aspen IQ applications.
For instructions and more information, see the Help topic "Customizing and
Troubleshooting Server-Related Services" in the "Web Interface
Customizations" section of the Aspen Production Control Web Server
WebHelp.

Aspen DMCplus (with Aspen

SmartStep technology)
APC Previews
APC Previews, a set of nine movies, help Aspen DMCplus users learn about
various workflows and features available in the APC product suite. They
briefly demonstrate new APC functionalities that facilitate and smoothen the
APC workflow. Each preview shows one or more related features that make a
particular task easier to complete. Context-sensitive toolbar buttons provide
access to the APC Previews in Aspen DMCplus Model, Aspen DMCplus Build,
and Aspen DMCplus Simulate. The toolbar animates in certain circumstances,
which shows that a specific preview may be helpful in the context of the
current task. APC Previews are available for the following:
 APC Preview 1: Custom and Built-In KPIs
 APC Preview 2: Role based KPI Views
 APC Preview 3: Reporting
 APC Preview 4: Online Data Preprocessing

Aspen PID Watch Performance
Monitor
Example report file for PID loop
performance monitoring
The example custom PID loop report, Sample PID Report.awr, provides a
list of the top twenty PID loops that exhibit deficient control performance.
Use Aspen Watch Maker to import and customize the Sample PID
Report.awr report file in order to make the report available from the Report
Files page of Aspen Production Control Web Server.
For instructions on how to work with custom report files (like Sample PID
Report.awr), see the Help topic "Importing and Exporting Custom Reports"
in the "Reports Management in Aspen Watch Maker" section of the Aspen
Watch System Administration Help.

Aspen Process Controller

Composite application support
Support for Composite applications has been added. Configuration, tuning,
simulation, and deployment of Composite applications are now supported in
Aspen Process Controller Builder. Constituent applications must have an FIR
model type.
To facilitate Composite applications, it is now possible to import, export, and
deploy multiple applications from the APC Workspace in Aspen Process
Controller Builder.

Aspen Production Control Web

Server
Important: Except where noted otherwise, the following enhancements are
supported only when the WCF communication protocol is used, which is the
default setting established during installation. For more information about
how WCF communication is enabled (or replaced with the legacy DAIS
protocol), see the configuration task "Choose Web Server communication
option" in Chapter 4, "After You Install," of the Aspen Manufacturing Suite
Advanced Process Control Installation Guide.

Aspen Manufacturing Suite Advanced Process Control V7.3 Release Notes 9

What-if simulation
When the Online tab is selected, a new Simulation menu command appears
for applications that are enabled for Adaptive Modeling and monitoring by
Aspen Watch Performance Monitor. The Simulation menu command appears
in the menu bar, next to the Manage menu command, and it displays the
What-If Simulation window.
For more information about the new What-If Simulation feature, see the
"Aspen Watch Performance Monitor" section below.

Note: What-If Simulation is supported by both the WCF and DAIS

protocols. However, DAIS does not support the Deploy feature that is
available from the What-If Simulation window.

Multi-application custom groups with table

separators
It is now possible to combine variables from multiple controller applications
into a single user-defined, or custom, group. The only restriction is that the
variables included in a custom group must come from similar types of
applications (due to column-set requirements).
Adding user-selectable subcontroller and test group request / status in the
header area of the page is also now supported.
To access the configuration page for this new feature, select the
Configuration tab in Aspen Production Control Web Server, and then click
Group Definitions in the NavBar, which displays the Group Definitions
pages.
In the Group Definitions pages, you can add separator lines to distinguish
and organize groups of variables into subgroups that have a particular
function (for example, to segregate the critical variables from constituent
applications that belong to an APC Composite application).
While configuring custom groups and subgroups, you can use a new feature
for making multiple selections of variables. This makes it easier to move
blocks of selected variables within or between subgroups.
The new features in the Group Definitions pages were added as part of the
extended group definitions initiative to support APC Composite applications.
They work just as well, however, for building custom groups from multiple
Aspen DMCplus and Aspen Process Controller (APC) applications, even if the
applications are not part of an APC Composite suite.
For more information, see the Help topic "Custom Groups" in the Aspen
Production Control Web Server WebHelp.

Support for Aspen Process Controller (APC)

Composite
Aspen Production Control Web Server now supports APC Composite
applications that are created using Aspen Process Controller Builder. These

10 Aspen Manufacturing Suite Advanced Process Control V7.3 Release Notes

applications appear under the Composite node in the NavBar. Users who are
site administrators will need to customize the web interface by creating
Group Definitions that include variables spanning the various constituent
applications that comprise the Composite suite.

Message filtering for roles and variable

groups
Messages that appear on pages under the Online tab are now automatically
filtered in two ways:
 User role: Only messages pertaining to applications that are visible to the
user's role are shown. For example, if a user is only able to view
application A, based on user role, then messages from application B will
not be displayed in the user's Overview page.

 Variable groups: Only messages that pertain to the overall application

and variables in the selected variable group appear on the Operations,
Engineering and Faceplates views. For example, when you select a
subcontroller variable group in the NavBar, the Operations view displays
messages pertaining only to variables in that subcontroller. This applies
also to user-defined variable groups.

New Aspen CUI look-and-feel

The Aspen Common User Interface, which serves as the web page framework
for Aspen Production Control Web Server, has been updated to display a
cleaner look-and-feel.

Note: The Aspen CUI feature is supported by both the WCF and DAIS
protocols.

STCRV entry enumerations made clearer

Options displayed for the entry STCRV have been changed to clearly indicate
that STCRV applies to Aspen DMCplus applications running in SmartStep
mode only. For applications running in DMCplus mode, STCRV has no effect.

Access a Controller Detail page from the

Model view
An information link—indicated by an icon—has been added to the top of
the Model view, which you access from the Online tab. The icon is
located above the plots area, and it displays the Controller Detail page,
which is especially useful for checking control interval, gain multiplier limits,
and so forth. The Controller Detail page is also useful for requesting to
recalculate a nonlinear model using current input values for MISO-based
Aspen Process Controller applications.

Aspen Manufacturing Suite Advanced Process Control V7.3 Release Notes 11

Option to hide default NavBar groups
An option to hide the default variable groups in the NavBar (for example,
Dependents and Independents) has been added to the User Preferences
page, which you access from the Preferences tab. If you clear the check box
for Show default variable groups in NavBar (in the User Preferences
page), it allows only custom variable groups to be shown if custom groups are
available. If no custom groups are defined for an application, then the default
groups are displayed, regardless of this setting. (For more information about
custom groups, see above, "Multi-application custom groups with table
separators.")

Note: The option to hide default NavBar groups is supported by both the
WCF and DAIS protocols.

Latched messages display

A table with the title Messages (Pending) now appears wherever messages
are displayed (in the Online tab) and one or more latched messages are
active for the application. This feature is particularly useful for seeing active
or latched messages that became active, but have scrolled off the recent
messages list.

Message table now on Faceplates views

A messages table now appears on the Faceplates view (Online tab).

General header sections updated

The header section for selected views has been updated with a more compact
display of general, subcontroller, and test group variable information,
including the color-coded run status indicator (identical to the NavBar run
status indicators) on Faceplates, Operations, Engineering, and
Calculations views (Online tab).
Multiple subcontroller and test group request / statuses can now be displayed
by adding these items to a custom variable group. See above, "Multi-
application custom groups with table separators."

Plots view enhancements and changes

The Plots view (Online tab) now clears any existing plots and launches the
selected variable group if activated from the Plots menu on the Faceplates,
Operations, Engineering, or Calculations views. In the past, accessing the
Plots view would only bring the Plots view to the foreground, but without
plotting the newly selected variable group. With this enhancement, the Plots
view now enables faster switching between viewing plots for different
applications.
Also, the Plots view now enables viewing larger plot sizes (up to 1680 x
1050) in a more predictable way. Previously, the maximum single plot size

12 Aspen Manufacturing Suite Advanced Process Control V7.3 Release Notes

was limited to 1600 x 1600, and if the plot exceeded either of those limits,
the view size would fall back to the default, which was 370 x 280. It now just
limits the size to the new maximum.

Note: The new Plots view enhancements are supported by both the WCF
and DAIS protocols.

Customized display of user defined entries

User defined entries can be displayed with custom description, column header
and change permissions. Additionally, application administrators can specify a
custom enumeration to facilitate data entry.
For instructions and more information, see the Help topic "Setting Display
Attributes for User-Defined Entries" in the "Web Interface Customizations"
section of the Aspen Production Control Web Server WebHelp.

Note: The customized display feature is supported by the WCF protocol only.
It works the same for all application types.

Override default change permissions

AspenTech provides a product configuration file that specifies the default
change permissions for all entries in a given product. For a specific
application, application administrators can modify the default permissions for
specific variables by creating an application specific override configuration file.
For example, a site might want to allow the operators to change operation
high / low limits for a limited set of variables and make the other operator
limits changeable by engineers only.
For instructions and more information, see the Help topic "Application Entry
Override" in the "Web Interface Customizations" section of the Aspen
Production Control Web Server WebHelp.

Note: The override change permissions feature is supported by the WCF

protocol only. It works the same for all application types.

History tab enhancements

The navigation bar for Aspen Watch data now updates more dynamically
when the page is refreshed. Previously, the user would need to log off and
reconnect or click the Refresh NavBar menu command to see newly added
applications or items displayed in the NavBar.

Note: See below, "Aspen Watch Performance Monitor," for additional

enhancements to the web interface that are related to Aspen Watch.

Aspen Manufacturing Suite Advanced Process Control V7.3 Release Notes 13

Aspen Watch Performance
Monitor
Improved KPI baseline management
The following new features in Aspen Watch Performance Monitor make it
easier to set up the baseline and threshold values for a controller application's
set of performance-monitoring KPIs:
 Auto baseline generation: A default set of baseline values is generated
automatically for a controller if no baseline case file exists and a certain
length of data has accumulated in the Aspen Watch database. The
triggering point for auto baseline generation occurs when 10 times TTSS
(time to steady-state of the controller) has elapsed. This automatically
generated baseline case is called AutoGenerated.CFG.
 Multiple data slices: In previous versions, only a single time window
could be specified for baselines generation. The program then calculated
baseline values for each KPI by using the data points found in the one
specified time window. Now you can specify multiple time windows, called
data slices. Each data slice is defined by its own start and end time. As a
result, calculated baseline values can be the averages of data points found
in one or multiple data slices of valid historical data.
 Create baseline cases from the web interface: Now you can also
create a baseline case from the web interface using Aspen Production
Control Web Server. Formerly this capability was available only from the
Baseline Management function of Aspen Watch Maker. To create a
baseline case from the web interface, click the Active Case link in the
Item Properties dialog box for a KPI plot. Then click the New button in
the Change Baseline Case dialog box.

Process-specific and custom KPI libraries

The following new features in Aspen Watch Performance Monitor make it
possible to set up custom KPI libraries with preconfigured KPIs that are more
process-specific to meet your site requirements:
 Create a customized KPI library: You now can save or retrieve a KPI
calculation to or from a KPI library. The KPI libraries can be ones that you
create, in addition to the default KPI libraries that are delivered as part of
the software installation. You can name each KPI library, and there is no
limit on how many libraries you can create.
 Populate default KPIs based on a KPI library of your choice: When
you add a controller to Aspen Watch Server through Aspen Watch Maker,
you can now specify which KPI library to be used for generating the
default KPIs, as well as specify whether the online KPI calculations should
be automatically updated, from a KPI library, when a controller is
reloaded.
 Distribute a KPI library to other Aspen Watch Servers: You can copy
a KPI library file to another machine and this same library can then be
reused by other Aspen Watch Servers.

14 Aspen Manufacturing Suite Advanced Process Control V7.3 Release Notes

 Leverage a process-specific KPI library: More often than not, you may
want to create a KPI calculation than is more process oriented than any of
the KPIs found in the default, installed KPI libraries. For example, you
may want to develop your own standardized KPI for monitoring the Total
Energy Cost of a unit. In version V7.3, we have included a Crude Unit KPI
library (AspenCDUKPI.cfg), which you can consult as an example of a
process-specific KPI library.

Improved user interface for KPI plots

display
 Role-based KPI plots display: Four roles are supported: Manager,
Engineer, Operator and Calc. When a KPI is created, you specify which
role(s) can view the KPI in a KPI plot. Unlike the previous version, where a
KPI could only belong to one role, it can now be assigned to more than
one role.
 KPIs grouping: In the previous version, KPIs are grouped together based
on one controller. Sometimes, you may want to see only a subset of KPIs
that are of interest, or you may want to see KPIs selected from multiple
controllers, such as all KPIs related to product qualities for a whole
process unit, not just a single controller. Now you can do so by creating a
named KPI group and then adding KPIs to this group. After the group is
created, it appears in the NavBar of Aspen Production Control Web
Server's display as if it were a new application.

Improved KPI configuration and

management
 Set baseline and threshold values during KPI configuration: Now
you can set baseline and threshold values when you create or edit a KPI
while working in the Custom Calculation Configuration dialog box of
Aspen Watch Maker. Moreover, if you save the KPI calculation to a KPI
library, these values are also saved as part of the KPI definition.
 Use another KPI calculation as data slicing criterion: Now you can
define a data slicing criterion that uses a custom KPI calculation and apply
it to other KPI calculations with just one click. For instance, if a low feed
rate indicates an abnormal process operation, you can define a Boolean
type calculation for detecting this condition. Then use it to slice out the
abnormal data for other calculations, without having to repeat the same
logic in every KPI calculation's formula.
 Duplicate changes seamlessly: After you save changes to a KPI
calculation, the Aspen Watch Maker program asks if you want to duplicate
the changes to other KPIs that have the same name but are associated
with other applications or variables.

Multi-cell editing features added to the Plot
List Manager page
Note: In version V7.3 the Tag List Manager page in the web interface has
been renamed to the Plot List Manager page.
When you create or edit a Plot List, you can now apply changes to the plotting
properties of multiple or all tags with one click, instead of applying the
changes to one tag at a time.

Assemble a new model from the web

viewer
You now can assemble a new model in the Assemble Model window, which
is accessed directly from the Modeling page of Aspen Production Control Web
Server. Previously, you could only download ID case results from the
Modeling page. Then, it was necessary to complete model assembly by using
Aspen DMCplus Model. The new web-based model assembly feature allows
you to select curves from different ID cases, add or remove a curve, and set
the gain or dead-time value(s) for specific model curves.

Web-based what-if simulation

Now you can run an Aspen DMCplus simulation in the web interface of Aspen
Production Control Web Server. The What-If Simulation window enables
you to capture a snapshot of the online controller and use it to run an Aspen
DMCplus Simulate equivalent step. You can edit various settings or tunings to
perform a "what-if" analysis. You can also use the What-If Simulation
window to verify a new model produced from the Assemble Model page.

Online model and controller update

The What-If Simulation window also provides a Deploy feature that
enables you to update an online controller application with either or both of
the following:
 A revised model, as created in the web-based Assemble Model window
and then verified in the What-If Simulation window.
 An updated set of controller tuning values, as revised and verified in the
What-If Simulation window.
The Deploy operation automatically saves a backup of the online controller,
transfers the new model and / or tuning values to the online server, loads the
changes into memory, and restarts the online controller.

Known Issues

This section describes the Known Issues in Aspen Manufacturing Suite

Advanced Process Control V7.3.

All Products
AMS does not support Terminal Server
CQ00054596
The Aspen Manufacturing Suite products do not currently support Terminal
Server clients.

Aspen DMCplus Builder

Loss of precision occurs when copying a
ramp curve
CQ00040936
When you copy a ramp curve from an output model into an assembled model,
there is some loss of precision in the final slope. This issue is similar to a
previous known issue that was fixed in 2.0 (WPAN46NUSW), but it only
affects ramps, and, in this case, the loss of precision is not as severe.

Aspen Manufacturing Suite Advanced Process Control V7.3 Release Notes 21

Aspen DMCplus Composite
Composite and controller rank groups share
same solution type
For each CV and ET, Composite may use different ranks than the controller.
The Composite and controller rank groups share the same solution type,
which can lead to inconsistencies.

Aspen Nonlinear Controller

Builder
Eliminate 9999 limit for BDN training
iterations
CQ00132671
Do not use a number above 9999 for the number of BDN Training Iterations
in either Apollo Model or in Aspen Process Statistical Analyzer: Nonlinear
Controller Builder. This should be a more than sufficient number of iterations
for industrial problems.

Changing physical limits changes tuning

CQ00054585
Tuning parameters that are in Engineering Units, such as Equal Concern
Errors, are internally stored as a percentage of the Physical Range. Changing
Upper or Lower Limits will change the values of these tuning parameters.
Physical limits should be set up at the beginning of the project and represent
the lowest and highest values that can possibly be achieved by the variable.

Aspen Process Controller

MasterOnOffRequest may be turned OFF by
controller
There are certain conditions where the MasterOnOffSwitch and
MasterOnOffStatus can be set to OFF by the controller:
 If the MasterOnOffStatus is ON and there is no MV in 'Control' (due to
service request, service status, or loop status), then the
MasterOnOffRequest switch will be turned OFF and an appropriate error
message logged.

22 Aspen Manufacturing Suite Advanced Process Control V7.3 Release Notes

 If the MasterOnOffStatus is OFF and the MasterOnOffRequest is ON, the
controller will not turn ON unless there is at least one MV that can be
controlled.

Aspen Process Statistical

Analyzer
Q Stat and T Square features fail to work
after outlier deletion
The Q Stat and T Square features can fail to work after the Clean button has
been executed in the multivariate statistical analysis.

Workaround
To circumvent this, save the file (after cleaning) by using File | Save Data to
MATLAB File menu command, and then reload. Then run the multivariate
statistical analysis feature again.

Aspen Production Control Web

Server
Note: Several of the known issues relating to Aspen Production Control Web
Server are successfully resolved if the new, default (for V7.2 and later) WCF-
based Data Services architecture is implemented at your site. However, if
circumstances require that the legacy Dais CORBA option remain in use at
your site, please note those issues that are relevant. Distinctions are made to
indicate which issues pertain only to the legacy CORBA option. For more
information about how WCF communication is enabled (or replaced with the
legacy Dais CORBA protocol), see the configuration task "Choose Web Server
communication option" in Chapter 4, "After You Install," of the Aspen
Manufacturing Suite Advanced Process Control Installation Guide.

WARNING: Network Card Configuration

issues
The most common cause of intermittent communication loss between the
machine hosting Aspen Production Control Web Server and the online
applications servers is an incorrectly configured Network Interface Card (NIC).
If the Dais CORBA option is in use, see the PCWS Troubleshooting Guide
(Solution ID: 121142), online at the AspenTech support web site, for the
latest information on this issue.

Aspen Manufacturing Suite Advanced Process Control V7.3 Release Notes 23

If the WCF option is in use, then workarounds related to CORBA or IIOP do
not apply. In general, the WCF option should present significantly fewer
problems.

Workaround
 Always specify the NIC's "Duplex Type" rather than allowing it to "Auto
Detect". Check this on both the Aspen Production Control Web Server
computer and on all Online host computers that connect to it.
 Never use "Teaming" mode or disconnect an additional NIC port (to
disable it) for multi-port NICs. Instead, use "Redundant" mode where the
same MAC address is used when switching from one port to the other and
disable additional port(s) via the manufacturer's NIC configuration
software.
 Disable the option for Windows to "allow the computer to turn off the
device to save power."
 CORBA option: Use IIOP protocol only. Remove TCP and UDP from the
list of protocols on the DAIS Trader machine and all other DAIS online
machines.

Partial web page is displayed (browser

blocking portions of the page)
After logging on, you may only see a portion of the web page, due to browser
security restrictions.

Workaround
If this happens, you must add the web site to your Local Intranet zone.
1 From the main menu in Internet Explorer, click Tools | Internet
Options. The Internet Options dialog box is displayed.
2 In the Internet Options dialog box, click the Security tab.
3 In the Security tab, click the Local Intranet icon. Then click the Sites...
button. (You may also have to click the Advanced... button.) The Local
Intranet dialog box is displayed.
4 Clear the Require server verification (https: for all sites in this
zone) check box.
5 In the Add this Web site to the zone text box, enter the Aspen
Production Control Web Server address (for example,
http://pcws001.mydomain.com).
Note: Enter the URL exactly the way you access it in the web browser,
but without the trailing /atcontrol—because there are other virtual root
directories that need to be trusted on the web server, such as
/AspenCUI, /AspenTech/Afw and /AspenSecurity.

24 Aspen Manufacturing Suite Advanced Process Control V7.3 Release Notes

6 Click OK to exit all open dialog boxes.

Note: If you complete the above workaround procedure, but you are still
prompted to log on (and then, afterwards, you can access the Aspen
Production Control Web Server web site), see the next Known Issue,
"Configuring Internet Explorer to automatically log on to PCWS in a secure
environment."

Configuring Internet Explorer to

automatically log on to PCWS in a secure
environment
Due to tighter security restrictions imposed by Windows Security Updates
(both on server and client computers), you may be prompted to enter your
logon credentials when connecting to the Aspen Production Control Web
Server.

Workaround
To have Internet Explorer automatically log you on with your Windows logon
credentials, follow these steps on each Internet Explorer client computer:
1 Add the web site to the Local Intranet Zone by following the
workaround steps provided in the previous Known Issue, "Partial web
page is displayed (browser blocking portions of the page)."
2 If you are still prompted to log on after completing step 1, but you can
successfully access the web site, then perform the following additional
steps.
3 After accessing the web site, double-click the Local Intranet icon that is
located in the lower right corner of Internet Explorer.
4 Click the Custom Level... button. The Security Settings dialog box is
displayed.
5 In the Security Settings dialog box, scroll to the bottom of the list, and
then select the Automatic logon with current username and
password option in the User Authentication section.
6 Click OK to save the setting. If you are prompted whether to "...change
the security settings for this zone", select Yes.
7 Click OK to exit all open dialog boxes.

History tab plots fail if %USERPROFILE% is

not on local PC
CQ00158297
This problem occurs when %USERPROFILE% environment variable / registry
key is changed from C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application
Data to a network path like \\server\user\data. This prevents the container
control from downloading properly and also prevents the ability for tag data
to be transferred from the parent web page to the plot control in the plot
page.

Aspen Manufacturing Suite Advanced Process Control V7.3 Release Notes 25

Workaround
The workaround is to use a drive letter instead of UNC notation. This is a
limitation of Internet Explorer.

Slow log-on and navigation performance

If Aspen Production Control Web Server is not properly configured in the
network's DNS (Domain Name Server), the web server may appear to stop
operating or perform very slowly.
A second cause can be from ADSA data sources that Aspen Production Control
Web Server scans when a user logs on. To minimize this problem, use the
locally installed ADSA Server to configure only your Aspen Watch data
sources, and try to remove any data sources for Aspen InfoPlus.21 systems
that are shut down.

Workaround for DNS issues

Check for invalid DNS entries by using the following three commands from a
command window on the web server machine:
 The following command returns your machine name and IP address:
ipconfig
 The following command returns the IP address for you web server. Make
sure it matches the information returned by the ipconfig command.
nslookup <webserver-name>
 Finally, enter the next command, and verify that it returns the same
machine name that the ipconfig command returned. If it does not, then
resolve this problem immediately with your Information Services (IS)
group.
nslookup <webserver-ip-address>
 If the web server was changed from a workgroup to a domain or the IP
address was changed, try using the following command to correct DNS
lookup problems.
ipconfig /flushdns

Web site access error message occurs

If you encounter the error message "The page cannot be displayed" in
Internet Explorer, verify that the IIS Admin Service and the World Wide
Web Publishing Service are started, by using the Services dialog box from
the Administrative Tools.
Additionally, ensure that the Default Web Site is running. You can do this
from the Internet Services Manager by navigating to, and right-clicking, the
"Default Web Site" node and selecting Start if the option is enabled (the
option is disabled if it is already running).

26 Aspen Manufacturing Suite Advanced Process Control V7.3 Release Notes

Error accessing web site when connecting
locally on Windows Server 2008
Workaround
1 Run Internet Explorer as Administrator.
2 Manually enter the web site address (http://<hostname>/atcontrol) when
connecting to Aspen Production Control Web Server locally on Windows
Server 2008.
Because of this known issue, the Start menu link for Aspen Production
Control Web Server will not work, unless you disable the UAC (User Access
Control) feature of Windows Server 2008.

Web pages do not display correctly or

appear to be missing content
It may be necessary to delete the Temporary Internet files on your client
computer before the new web pages will display correctly, especially after you
have upgraded from a previous installation. (Certain files are cached on the
client computer and need to be removed so the new files will be used in their
place.)

Workaround
1 In Internet Explorer, navigate to the web page that exhibits the error, and
refresh the web page as follows:
o While holding down the CTRL key, press the F5 key.
Note: Also ensure that you have added the Aspen Production Control
Web Server web site to the Local Intranet zone in Internet Explorer. For
instructions, see the workaround procedure in the previous Known Issue,
"Configuring Internet Explorer to automatically log on to PCWS in a secure
environment."

Aspen SmartStep Online

Test service switch impacts proposed
moves for control mode in open loop
An open loop tester will typically show the proposed moves it would make had
the tester been ON at the current cycle. If the test group is in test mode, then
a proposed test move will be shown. If the test group is in control mode, then
the proposed control moves should be shown. If an MV test service switch
(STMVSRV) is OFF and the test group is in control mode, then the MV will be
assumed to be OFF for the control calculation and the open loop proposed
moves will be misleading. To see proposed control moves when the loop is
closed and the test group is in CONTROL, ensure that all of the test switches
are ON.

Aspen Watch Server
Model Verification aborts with error code 2
If a Model Verification Case (submitted from the Web interface) aborts with
error code 2, check to see if Aspen DMCplus Simulate (on the Aspen Watch
Server PC) can successfully open and acquire a license within three seconds.
If needed, use the SLM Configuration Wizard to select a specific license server
for Aspen DMCplus Desktop (do not use the broadcast option). If this appears
not to be the problem, make sure you have run the Install Database
Configuration command file that sets permissions for this simulation server.

TSK_IQn task fails to start

You may receive an error when starting a database for one of the TSK_IQn
tasks.

Workaround
Use Windows Task Manager to check for one of the following processes, and
terminate it:
 PerformAnalysis.exe
 SimDriver.exe
 PIDWatch.exe
Then restart the database.

Simulation task may fail to complete and

block any new request
CQ00102496
The Model Verification simulation task may fail to complete in some
situations. These situations include:
 The computer is rebooted before the Model Verification job is completed.
 The CCF is corrupted and cannot be loaded.
 The CCF content does not match the MDL content.
When this occurs, the status of the current simulation case will show
Running and will remain that way. As the result, the case will not be
completed and no new case can be requested.

Workaround
Perform the following steps to restore the functionality:
1 Access the Windows Task Manager dialog box (press CTRL + ALT +
DEL, and then click Task Manager...).
Then stop the following, related processes:
o simulate.exe

28 Aspen Manufacturing Suite Advanced Process Control V7.3 Release Notes

o SimDriver.exe
2 Change the case status from Running to Aborted by following these
steps:
o Open InfoPlus.21 Administrator.
o Locate the definition record AW_MDLSIMDEF.
o Find the record corresponding to the hung case.
o Change the value of AW_RECORD_STATUS to Aborted.
3 Resubmit the case using the Aspen Production Control Web Server
History tab.

Hyphenated server name causes data

collection failure for online APC
applications
After data collection is started for an online Aspen Process Controller (APC)
application (via the Aspen APC Performance Monitor Data Service), the
collection process subsequently fails if the online APC application server has a
server name that includes a hyphen, or dash (-), character.

Workaround
Host online APC applications on a server with an alphanumeric server name
that does not include a hyphen, or dash (-), character.
