av = Distance of load from the face of the support.
b = Breadth of the Corbel
d = Effective depth of the corbel at the face of the support.
z = Lever arm distance (distance of the center of compression
form the center of the tension steel)
Fv = Applied vertical load
Ft = Tension in the horizontal direction due to Fv
Fc = Compression developed in concrete as strut action to support Fv
Fh = Horizontal force from the member.
1.0 Primary Data:-
Factored load actiong on Corbel, Fv = 5.0715 kN (2 x Max. reaction)
Factored lateral load from beam, Fh = 0 kN
Shear span, av = 110 mm
Breadth of the corbel, b = 450 mm
Depth of corbel at support, Ds = 1050 mm
Grade of concrete, fck = 25 N/mm2
Grade of Steel, fy = 500 N/mm2
Maximum shear strength of concrete = 3 N/mm2 (assumed)
** Since the position of the point load from platfrom beam B1 is at the inside edge of concrete shell, so the
value of av theoritically should be 0. But here we are calculating the value of av only considering the
portion of end bearing plate which is located beyond the inside edge of the shell
Dimension of the end bearing plate = 1355 x 590
Width of the plate beyond inside edge of chimney shell = 295 mm
So, value of shear span,av = (295 ÷ 2) ≈ 150 mm

DESIGN CALCULATION
2.0 Dimensioning of corbel :-
Length of the end bearing plate (P5) = 230 mm
Bearing strength (0.8 x fck) = 20 N/mm2
Required width of the plate = [(5.0715x1000)]÷[(230x20)]= 1.1025 mm
Width of the plate provided = 230 mm
So, portion of the plate beyond inside edge of shell = 115 mm
Breadth of the corbel provided = 450 mm
> 230 Hence ok
Length of the corbel provided = 400 mm
> 115 Hence ok
Required effective depth of corbel, dreqd =[(5.0715x1000)]÷[(450x3)] = 3.76 mm
Required total depth at the support of corbel = (d+cover+Ф/2) = 69.7567 mm
(Assuming nominal cover = 50mm & dia of reinf 32 mm)
Provided depth of corbel at support location, Ds = 500 mm (excluding 75
thk grout)
Provided effective depth of corbel, d = 434 mm
Shear span to depth ratio, av/d = 0.25 mm
0.25 < 0.6, will act as corbel

Now, k =
Fv 0.001 & a/d = r = 0.25 & k/(k+r) = 0.005

So, the formula become,

−A × + B=0
d () k a 2
( )
r +k
0.995 & B= ( )()
k +r

d
= 0.0003
So, z/d = 0.909 ⇒ z= 394.51 mm
Now, (d-z) = 0.45x ⇒ 39.49 = 0.45x ⇒ x= 87.7644 mm
Now, x/d = 0.202
Limiting value of x/d = 0.46 ( Refer page 70 of IS:456-2000)
So x/d < 0.46, Hence ok

DESIGN CALCULATION
4.0 Resolution of forces :-
Now,
F v ×a 1.41408 kN Ft < (Fv/2), Hence ok
Ft= =
z
fy
Yield strain of reinforcement steel = +0 . 002 = 0.0042
1 . 15×E s
Since value of x/d is within the limiting value, so checking for the strain of reinforcement is not required.
5.0 Area of tensile steel :-
Now, total tensile force = Ft+Fh = 1.41 kN
Ft + Fh F + Ff
Area of tensile steel, A
st = = t = 3.25077 mm2
fs 0 . 87×f y
Minimum value of tensile reinforcement is 0.4% & maximum value is 1.3%
Minimum area of tensile reinforcement = 781.2 mm2
Required area of tensile reinforcement = 781.2 mm2
Dia of Bar = 16 & No of bars provided = 4
So area of tensile steel provided = 804.248 mm2
Hence provide 4 nos. 16 dia bar
6.0 Area of Shear steel :-
Area of shear reinforcement, Asv = (Ast/2) = 402.124 mm2
Dia of link provided = 16 mm
No of leg for each links = 4
No of link required = 1
No. of Link Provided = 6
Area of shear reinforcemnet provided = 4825.49 mm2
Provide 1 nos 16 dia link (each of 4 legs) in the upper two-third depth.
Spacing of shear reinforcement = 48.2222 mm

DESIGN CALCULATION
7.0 Shear Capacity of the section :-
Percentage of steel provided = (100xAst/b.d) = 0.41
Permissible shear strength, τc= 0.45 N/mm2
Shear enhancement factor = (2xd/av) = 7.89091
Encenced shear strength = 3.56 N/mm2
Maximum shear strength = 3 N/mm2
So, actual enhanced shear strength,τm = 3.00 N/mm2
Shear capacity of concrete (τm x b x d)= 585.9 kN
Shear capacity of steel (0.87 x fy x As x d/Sv) = 3148.6 kN
Total shear capacity = 3734.5 kN > 5.0715, Hence it is safe
