KU Lesson Plan Format Template

I. Objectives and Standards


 Standard - CC.1.4.2.M-Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences
or events.

A. Performance Objectives:
 The students will be able to analyze a fairy tale scene and compose a
timed free writing piece in 10 minutes that displays their perspective
on what could happen in the undefined fairy tale illustration.

 The students will be able to apply their knowledge of the


characteristics of fairy tales to construct a first draft for their own
original fairy tale story.

II. Instructional Materials


A. Teacher:
 Free write picture (attached below)
 Timer
 Pencil/pen
 Paper (for free write)
B. Student
 Writing folder
 Writing Notebook
 Pencil
 Lined paper (for 1st drafts)

III. Subject Matter Explanation


A. Prior Knowledge/ Prerequisite Skills:
 How to write multiple sentences on the same topic
 How to put own original ideas down in writing
 Skills: How to hold a pencil and write letters & words.

B. New Knowledge
 Writing process for the stories
1. Brainstorm
2. 1st draft –editing
3. Final copy – nicest handwriting!
4. Illustrations added
 Characteristics of fairy tales: magic, mythical creatures, royalty,
once upon a time, happily ever after, villains, good vs. evil
IV. Implementation
A. Introduction:
 Introduce writing for the day by explain that students will complete
a 10-minute free-writing activity. Explain that since the unit is fairy
tales, students will get to look at a scene from a fairy tale. Encourage
them to write their own story or to write about what kind of a fairy
tale could take place in the scene shown.
 Have students take out writing notebooks
 Show picture on screen
 Set timer & allow students 10 minutes to write

B. Development
 After 10 minutes ask students to turn and share their story with a
partner
 After a few minutes ask partners to switch roles and let new partner
share their story
 Pick 2 popsicle sticks to share their story with class
 Have students take out writing folders
 Instruct students to continue working on brainstorming sheets and
first drafts
 Remind students that they cannot start a first draft until their
brainstorming sheet is approved
 Meet with students to talk about brainstorming sheets
 Edit 1st drafts as completed and meet with students to talk about edits
before having them move on to a final copy
 Remind students they must have their brainstorming sheet reviewed
by the end of writing today

C. Closure
 Collect any brainstorming sheets that still need to be reviewed
 Have students put all of their papers into their writing folder
 Remind students that the class will continue to work on writing their
original stories for the next few days

D. Accommodations/ Differentiation:
 Stronger writers may be asked/challenged to include more than 3
characteristics of fairy tales in their writing piece

B. Summative- final published story at end of unit
