Assignment 6

Jarmin's goals are to become a high school English teacher. She is inspired by past teachers and enjoys working with kids. Her degree outcomes of effective writing/speaking and analyzing texts will help her teach students. After graduating, she plans to get a master's degree through an online or campus program. For her major, she will take literature and environment and Shakespeare courses to discuss these topics with future students. While college is financially challenging as the first in her family to attend, she is focused on the career opportunities her degree will provide.

Assignment 6: Define Your Goals

1. Professional goals: My professional goals as of right now would be becoming an

educator at a high school teaching English. My high school teacher Mrs. Karnik, and also

my college English 120 professor Dr. Helstern, inspired me to major in education.

Another reason I am interested in teaching English at the high school level would be my

passion for working with kids. While I worked at Badlands Ministries Bible Camp for the

past two summers now, I have found that I am called to work with kids, and that it is the

most rewarding type of work that I have ever done. I find the classroom discussions to be

extremely interesting because kids have a better imagination than any adult could ever

have.

2. Two outcomes for the English/English Education major: The two outcomes that relate

to my professional goals would be outcomes 1 and 2. Outcome one states that, “English

majors will be able to write and speak effectively for a variety of purposes and audiences

in a variety of genres and media.” This will be useful because I need to speak and write

effectively when I am in the classroom teaching students how to do as I say, and also as I

do. The second outcome for an English degree says, “English majors will be able to read

(analyze, interpret, critique, evaluate) written and visual texts.” Being able to read written

and visual texts while being able to analyze, interpret, critique and evaluate them will be

handy because this will help my students to better understand the material we will be

learning about.

3. Where will you be in five years—Graduate school: I am hoping to attend graduate

school once I have earned my bachelor’s degree, because I feel as though this will help

me better educate my students once I become a secondary English teacher. On the

GradSchools.com website I found out that I could take many online programs, but if I

wanted to stay on campus then I would have to attend the University of North Dakota.

There were about 65 choices between both online and campus options for earning your

Certificate, Masters or Doctorate if I wanted to stay in North Dakota.

4. Curriculum guides for an English Education major: For my English Education major,

I will get the opportunity to take two literature electives at the 300- or 400- level. The

classes that I want to take are:

 336 Literature and the Environment

 380 Shakespeare

These classes will help me achieve my professional goals by effectively communicating

different aspects of literature to my future English students. When I become an English

teacher, I will be able to explain how literature and the environment correlate with one

another, and how prevalent the environment is within literature.By taking a Shakespeare

elective, I can discuss with my future students the comedies, tragedies, and poetry of

William Shakespeare.

5. Financial aspects: In my family, my twin sister and I are the first to attend a university

for our college education. When my sister and I were ready to attend college, we didn’t

have a college fund to dig into and neither did my two older brothers and sister. This

meant that we were on our own for paying for college, and we have had to take out a few

loans. We were fortunate enough to get a couple of grants and also have the ability to live

at home while attending school, so this has cut down on the cost quite dramatically. I will

have to pay off my loans once I am out of school, but I am optimistically looking at the

education and degree that I’ll have which will propel me into a good job, instead of

looking at a high student loan bill.
