This piece was written afier a trip to the highlands oÍ the quiet istand of Moloka,iwhere
the
long thin needles of the lronurood trees rustle in the wínd io make a sound like crashing
waves'. The birdsongs that appear in this piece are those of endangered native Hawaiian
birds whose existence is threatened by dwindling natural resources] This piece is
a call to
care for nature and the enviro0ment, as well as ã warning that native language,
culture,
and tradition can be lost if not given lhe proper care.
Herb ÍUlahelona, a graduate of the University of Hawaii, lives Ín Honolulu where he works
as an accornpanist, composer, and arranger íor the Hawaii youth opera chorus.
