1. The sculptor creates beauty with his bare hands. He takes a

piece of clay or other molding material, molds it, and breathes life into
it. He may mold the form of a young boy fishing by the river or a young
girl braiding her hair. Whatever it is, he has created beauty.

2. Ours is a world of beautiful sights and interesting sounds.

Pleasure awaits those who have the eyes and ears for them. Many of
these sights and sounds are gifts of nature; some are gifts of
imaginative people such as songs, paintings, and sculptures. There are
pyramids, temples, and castles in faraway places that have stood the
test of time. We have to see things, even only in pictures, to be able to
appreciate them.

3. Art has two phases: one having to do with expression and

the other, having to do with enjoyment. You have many opportunities
to take part in both of these art phases in your daily activities. You may
express yourself artistically in the choice and manner of wearing your
clothing. You can also express yourself artistically as you sing, draw or
write and as you make things at home or at school. On the other
hand, art is all about you to enjoy if your eyes are trained to see it. You
may see examples of art in the arrangement of furniture in the home,
the packages in which food is displayed, the arrangement of goods in
store windows, and the advertisements in newspapers and magazines.

4. Go to a mirror and you will see your own smiling eyes and
crescent-shaped mouth. Go out to your garden and you may notice a
rainbow of colors red, yellow, blue, pink, orange, violet, green, white-
among the flowers and other plants. Look around you and you may
notice the sun’s rays shining through fleecy clouds. Indeed, wherever
you go, you will come face to face with various forms of art.

5. Even during primitive times, people were already

expressing their desire to record beauty around them. They drew
pictures and etched drawings on the walls of their cave homes. They
fashioned many kinds of objects from clay and stone. The objects they
made were things needed for their daily survival as well as other

Your Rights and the Rights of Others

As an individual, you have several rights. Foremost among them
are the right to worship God in the way you like, the right to speak and
write freely, the right to live in peace, and the right to go and move
about as you wish.
These rights place on you the duty to exercise them in a
responsible way and with due regard for others. This means that in
exercising your right you should take care that others enjoy their rights,
too.

( Mrs. Buendia is trying to put her baby to sleep. The radio next door,

MRS. BUENDIA: Susmariosep! How can Jojo sleep with that radio turn
up so loud?
MR. BUENDIA: Yes how could anybody even think with that noise next
door?

MRS. BUENDIA: Where else? I’m going to tell our neighbor what I think
of their manners. It’s siesta time but they have their radio turned on so
loud that it’s enough to wake up the whole neighborhood. Have you
ever known such inconsiderate neighbors?

MR. BUENDIA: No, but what are you going to tell them? They have the
right to enjoy the music from their radio in their apartment.

MRS. BUENDIA: That’s right. But in so doing, they should not keep us
from enjoying our siesta and our baby from sleeping.

MR. BUENDIA: Be careful! Please don’t quarrel with Mrs. Ramos.

MRS. BUENDIA: ( Knocking at the door. Raff and rody, the children of
Mrs. Ramos let her in) Is your mother or father in?

RAFF: Yes, Mrs Buendia.

RODY: Have a seat, please.

MRS. BUENDIA: Thank you.

MR. RAMOS: Hello, Mrs Buendia. What is it?

MRS. BUENDIA: I hope you won’t mind my telling you. Your radio is
turned on so loud, my baby couldn’t sleep.

MR. RAMOS: Oh? We didn’t know we were disturbing you. Will you turn
it off, Rody?

MRS. BUENDIA: Oh, no! You need not to turn it off. Will you just turn
down the volume a little, please?

MR. RAMOS: Certainly, I’m sorry, Mrs. Buendia. These boys have been
so used to listening to loud music that they fail to realize they might be
disturbing our neighbors.

MRS. BUENDIA: Thank you very much, Mr. Ramos.

MR. RAMOS: (Smiling) You’re welcome.

(Mrs. Ramos comes in)

MRS. RAMOS: What’s the idea giving in to Mrs. Buendia? She has no
right telling us what to do in our own household. It is our right to do as
we please in our house.

158
… where empowered school heads produce great schools
MR. RAMOS: Yes, to do what we please is our right, but in exercising this
right, we must take care that we give due regard for others.

RAFF: I wonder, Father, if the quarrel between Mrs. Arigo and Mrs.
Eugenio would have been prevented if they had your way of thinking.

MRS. RAMOS: What was their quarrel about?

RAFF: Mrs. Arigo’s pig ate up all the plants of Mrs. Eugenio.

MRS. RAMOS: Naturally, Mrs. Eugenio has a reason to be angry.

RAFF: Mrs. Eugenio told Mrs. Arigo that she should have fenced her
garden.

RODY: And Mrs. Arigo shouted back that Mrs. Eugenio should have tied
her pig or put in a pen.

Mr. RAMOS: They are both right but unfortunately, they failed to do
what they thought they should have done. This is the same way with
our rights. We only know our rights but very often, we do not take care
that the exercise of these rights means also the enjoyment of the rights
of others.

Mosquitos Prefer Attractive People

MIAMI, Sat: Mosquitos do not randomly perch on just anybody, but

choose their victims selectively, searching for the most aromatically
appealing human, according to a study released recently.

“Mosquitoes use odor to sort attractive people from the unattractive

to find those that are the most tasty,” said University of Florida
entomologist, Jerry Butler, I a statement.

In a study of what attracted mosquitoes to people, Butler said he

worked out a therapy that they go for humans who provide the richest
source of cholesterol and B vitamins, which the pesky insects need to
live on but do not produce themselves.

Butler found one sure way to stop attracting them – stop breathing. He
said that mosquitoes can sniff out an attractive human dinner target
from as far away as 64.3 kilometres.

When human beings exhale, they expel a plume of carbon dioxide

and other odors that travel through the air. The appetizing concoction
is the olfactory equivalent of a dinner bell, alerting mosquitoes that a
warm meal is within range. Perspiration, a barely avoidable human
condition, is also a mosquito lure –but only if the sweat has marinated
and formed bacteria.

When a mosquito is trailing an attractive target, it zigzags following the

breath plume until it makes contact, landing on the skin and patiently
searches for just the right spot to insert its stylet for an 8 – to – 10 second
feeding session.

Butler also found that bathing helps reduce the attractiveness of a

sticky body but strangely enough after – bath products do not. Skin
care products that clean, soften and moisturize may improve a
person’s appearance,, but are also tantalizing to mosquitoes. Certain
medications, including hearts and blood pressure medicines, can also
alter a person’s likelihood of being bitten.

Butler said that he conducted the research in order to explore the

taste of mosquitoes and help humans avoid mosquito-borne diseases.

“If you can figure out who, among your friends, is attractive to
mosquitoes, be sure to invite that person to all your outdoor

gatherings. You might be able to spare, other guest from mosquito
bites,” Butler said.

The Wind and the Sun
(Aesop’s Fable)
The wind and the sun argued one day over which one was the
stronger. Spotting a man traveling on the road, they sported a
challenge to see which one could remove the coat from the man’s
back the quickest.
The wind began. He blew strong gusts of air, so strong that the
man could barely walk against them. But the man clutched his coat
tight against him. Then, the wind blew harder and longer. The harder
the wind blew, the tighter the man held his coat against him. The wind
blew until he was tired, but he could not remove the coat from the
man’s back. It was now the sun’s turn. He gently sent his beams upon
the traveler. The sun did very little, but quietly shone upon his head
and back until the man became so warm that he took off his coat and
headed for the nearest shady tree.

The Tausugs are the largest of the Muslim groups who live in Sulu and
are also considered to be the bravest. It is said that they have never been
conquered by any tribe in 300 years. Tausugs used to have the reputation of
being a warlike people, but most of them are really peace-loving, friendly,
and hospitable. They are also lovers of music and dance. Honor and self-
esteem are valued traits among the Tausugs. Here are some interesting and
unique features of Tausug culture:
Tausug warriors wear amulets for protection and these are secured
from gurus (teachers) for a fee. These are used to make the wearer
invulnerable to bullets. They sport weapons around their waists.

Women and children are not allowed to handle the amulets for fear
that they will lessen their potency.

Many Tausugs believe in black magic, sorcery, voodoo, and love

potions.

The Koran, their Bible, forbids them from eating meat and dishes that
use or utilize the blood of animals.A political leader sometimes resorts to
polygamy so as to have a big family.

HE HONEST WOODMAN
From Aesop’s Fable
In a village next to a forest there lived two woodcutters. They
were neighbours staying to each other. Deena, the first woodcutter is
a very energetic and honest one. Soma the other woodcutter was lazy
and mean person.
One day, Deena was chopping some wood near the river. He
lost grip of his axe and it fell into the water. He could not get it as the
water was deep. Because the axe was important to him, he felt the
loss deeply. He sat near the river and cried.
Soon Mercury, the youthful messenger of the gods, appeared to
him and asked why he was crying. Informed about the axe that fell in
the water, Mwercury dived in the water and brought out a golden
axe. The woodman shook his head and said, “That’s not mine”. So
Mercury dived again and this time brought out a silver axe. Again the
woodman refused to get it as it was not his. The third axe, an old
wooden axe, was brought out finally, and the woodman jumped with
joy. It was his axe. He didn’t know how to thank Mercury. Mercury was
so touched by the woodman’s honesty that he gave the woodman
the gold and the silver axes as well.
The woodman went home and happily told his neighbours about
his good fortune. One of his neighbours became interested in getting
rich himself. He went to the river and dropped his axe there. Then he
sat down and cried. Sure enough Mercury appeared and offered to
get it for him. When Mercury came up with the golden axe, the man
hastily said it was his and held out his hand to get the golden axe.
Mercury got angry with the man’s greediness and dishonesty. He
threw the gold axe back into the water and never came back to help
the greedy man.

Without using books, he taught his pupils arithmetic, languages and

“Emperor”. Everyone wanted to be the emperor who was usually
awarded with the seat at the head of the bench while the poorest
pupil was given the seat at its foot. The poorest pupil was asked to
jump, dance or perform other physical exercises before the others.Dr.
Rizal encouraged his pupils to achieve much in their studies and to
build up a good character. He rewarded those who did good work
with gifts such as clothing and books. The boys who had received
many gifts went with him in his hunting trips.Maestro Rizal put up a

Directions: Read the selection entitled, “The Revolutionaries” and

complete the chart that comes after the selection:

The Revolutionaries

They say there is nothing like oppression and tyranny to challenge the
courage of those who would lead a nation out of darkness and
despair to freedom.

The first man to answer the call of our country and people is Dr. Jose P.
Rizal, the national hero. He is also called “Indio Bravo,” and “the first
Filipino.” He was persecuted as a student because of his brilliant mind.
He had a secret pact with his brother Paciano to leave the Philippines
and study abroad without the knowledge of their parents, so he could
better prepare for the liberation of his race. His books prepared the
minds of his people to fight against tyranny and abuse. Then, there

188
… where empowered school heads produce great schools
was his four-year exile in Dapitan, considered a key moment in the
hero’s life. Rizal’s sacrifice is an inspiration to all. He has left a legacy
that is worthy of emulation by the young.

In November 30 of every year, the nation commemorates the

important role of Andres Bonifacio and other heroes who took up arms
against Spain. He founded the Katipunan and led the cry at
Balintawak, inspired by his reading of the history of the French
Revolution. He died in 1897 and like Rizal, he, too, has set an example
of a life sacrificed for love of country and people.
Then, there’s Marcelo H. del Pilar, journalist and leader of the
propaganda movement in Spain. In his writings, he reserved his tirades
for the parish priests who served the colonial government, and not the
people and who, in fact, became the chief obstacle to the reforms
advocated by the propaganda movement. “La Solidaridad”
showcases the works of Marcelo H. del Pilar, Graciano Lopez-Jaena,
Jose P. Rizal, Jose Ma. Panganiban, Ferdinand Blumentritt, and
Mariano Ponce. “La Solidaridad” was the mouthpiece of the Filipino’s
struggle for recognition and acceptance of the Philippines by Spain.

Apolinario Mabini, the “Sublime Paralytic” was a different kind of hero.

He was born to a farmer’s family on July 23, 1864 in Talaga, Tanauan,
Batangas. He worked as a houseboy to be able to study. He finished
as a scholar at Letran at the age of 17.He became a professor at 18
and finished Law later. He joined the reform movement and Rizal’s La
Liga Filipina and supported La Solidaridad. He became a paralytic at
age 31, but continued his work for the nation. He has since then been
referred to as the “Sublime Paralytic.”

Philippine Independence was proclaimed on June 12, 1898, the first

democratic republic in Asia, but it was at war before it can even start.
On August 22, 1898, Gen. Aguinaldo ordered the transfer of the seat of
government from Cavite to Malolos, Bulacan and gathered the
national congress to draft a constitution. It took four months. After this,
he was elected president. Twelve days later, the war with America
began.

The Filipino women too, have contributed their blood and tears to the
cause for which the men have died. Bonifacio’s widow, Gregoria de
Jesus or “Peyang”, stands for all the women of the revolution who
were either widowed as she was, or lost their children. She wrote a
poem of 40 stanzas, where she expressed her feelings of grief over the
death of Andres Bonifacio. The Agoncillo sisters sewed the first
Philippine flag in Hong Kong in time for the inauguration of the first

189
… where empowered school heads produce great schools
Philippine Republic in Kawit, Cavite. Another brave woman was
Melchora Aquino or “Tandang Sora” whose deeds are well-known.
These are the men and women of the Revolution. If freedom is
precious to the Filipino, it is because it was bought at so high a price-
no less than the blood of these noble men and women- great Filipinos
all.

How graceful are her stately plains
Her towering emerald trees
How pliant her rustling bamboos green
Dancing blissfully in the breeze-
How pretty her white sampaguitas.

How modest and sweet her daughters

Her blue skies and sparkling waves
How I love this dear Phillippines
