Cefuroxime is a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic taken orally twice daily to treat infections caused by streptococcus pneumoniae, streptococcus pyogenes, haemophilus influenzae, staphylococcus aureus, and escherichia coli such as pharyngitis, tonsillitis, urinary tract infections, and skin infections. Common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, rash, and thrombophlebitis at IV sites. Nurses should assess for allergies, monitor for loose stools or rashes, ensure food is taken with the medication, and notify the prescriber of any side effects or superinfections.
