Why Standardized Tests Should End

Standardized tests have long been used to evaluate students but should be abolished for several reasons. They cause stress and anxiety in students that can impair learning and performance. They do not accurately measure a student's knowledge, intelligence, skills, creativity or work ethic. Teachers also feel pressure to "teach to the test" which limits creativity and students' overall understanding for the sake of improving test scores. While standardized tests are effective for some evaluation purposes, they should be removed because of the negative impact on students' well-being and learning.

Do you remember to time you were obliged to memorize some things because your teacher told you

and it will be on the test? The after a week or 2, you just forgot everything. I’m sure all of us has been
into this situation.

For centuries, standardized test has always been a part of the school system for the evaluation of every
students. According to Education Reform’s post, a standardized test is any form of a test that requires all
test takers to answer the same question, or a selection of question from common bank of questions, in
the same way, and that is scored in a ”standardized” or consistent manner, which makes it possible to
compare the relative performance of individual students or group of students.

Standardized test should vanish because of these 3 main reasons. First, it causes stress and anxiety
among students. Instead of bringing motivation and eagerness to learn, it brings discomfort and if
affects the overall performance of the students. According to The Classroom’s article, stress from
standardized test can lead to poorer health and negative feelings toward school. An article from
VeryWellMind says that , test anxiety is a psychological condition in which people experience extreme
distress and anxiety in testing situations. While many people experience some degree of stress and
anxiety before and during exams, test anxiety can actually impair learning and hurt test performance.

Second, it doesn’t determine someone’s knowledge and intelligence. According to Maria Morford’s
article, test cannot measure passion, creativity, work ethic, personalities, skills and the list goes on.
Intelligence includes a lot of aspects a test cannot measure. It is absurd to think that bubbling some
multiple choice from a test would determine someone’s success. What it measures is the ability of the
students to memorize information and how fast they can answer a test in a given time. According to
Ayusha Patel, standardized test do not provide any information regarding a student’s critical thinking,
collaboration skills, or social skills, which collectively provide a more accurate representation of success.

Lastly, there is a pressure to the teachers to “teach to the test”. Teachers tend to focus on certain topics
that will come out in the test, making them to miss the chance to teach the overall picture of the topic.
According to Bryan Nixon, Educators frequently start “teaching to the test” if they feel that their
evaluations solely depend on how well student perform. Educators may also stop trying new techniques
and teaching methods in the classroom. An article from GradePowerlearning also stated that teachers
may end up “teaching to the test” rather than giving the students a deeper understanding of a subject.
This also creates a classroom atmosphere that lacks creativity and can limit a student’s learning
potential due to boredom.

In conclusion, even though standardized test is effective in some ways, it should still be abolished
because it causes stress and anxiety among students, it does not determine someone’s knowledge and
intelligence and it pressures the teachers to teach to the test. Sure, this tests are for evaluation and
maybe it is 70% percent of our grades but it is 0% our future.
