DETERMINANTS
1. DETERMINANTS
a1 b1 c1
Determinants of third order: The symbol a2 b2 c 2 consisting of 32 elements arranged
a3 b3 c3
in three rows and three columns, is called a determinant of third order. Its value is
a1b2c3 + a2b3c1 + a3b1c2 a1b3c2 a2b1c3 a3b2c1
This may be written as a1 (b2c3 b3c2) b1 (a2c3 a3c2) + c1 (a2b3 a3b2)
b2 c2 a c2 a2 b2
or a1 b1 2 c1

b c2 a c2 a b2
a2 b2 c 2 a1 2 b1 2 c1 2 ... (ii)
b3 c3 a3 c3 a3 b3

Note that each term of a second order determinant is the product of two quantities and
each term of a third order determinant is the product of three quantities.
1.2 MINORS
The minor of a given element of a determinant is the determinant of the elements which
remain after deleting the row and the column in which the given element occurs.
b2 c2 a c1
For example, the minor of a1 in (ii) is , and the minor of b2 in (ii) is 1
b3 c3 a3 c3
The minor of a1 in (i) is b2 and b2 may be considered a determinant of first order. Similarly,
the minor of a2 is b1.
1.3 COFACTORS
In (ii), the elements a1, b1, c1 are multiplied by
b2 c2 a c2 a b2
, 2 , 2
b3 c3 a3 c3 a3 b3
These expressions are called the cofactors of the elements a1, b1, c1.
Generally, the cofactor of an element is its minor with its sign or opposite sign prefixed in
accordance with the following rule:
For any determinant if aij be the element at the intersection of the ith row and jth column,
then the cofactor of aij has positive sign or negative sign before minor of aij according as i + j is
even or odd. The determinant may be expanded along any chosen row or column.
The cofactors of the elements a1, b1, c1, a2, b2, c2, a3, b3, c3 will be denoted by A1, B1, C1,
A2, B2, C2, A3, B3, C3 respectively.
For example, element b3 in (ii) lies at the intersection of the third row and the second
column. Since 3 + 2 = 5 is an odd number, we have
a1 c1
B3
a2 c2
a1 c1
The cofactor B2 of the element b2 is , because element b2 lies at the intersection
a3 c3
of the second row and the second column, and 2 + 2 = 4 is an even number.
Let the determinant (ii) be denoted by . When the cofactors are used, the expansion of
the determinant takes the compact form:
= a1A1 + b1B1 + c1C1 = a2A2 + b2B2 + c2C2 = a3A3 + b3B3 + c3C3.
= a1A1 + a2A2 + a3A3 = b1B1 + b2B2 + b3B3 = c1C1 + c2C2 + c3C3
and a2A1 + b2B1 + c2C1 = 0 = a2A3 + b2B3 + c2C3 etc.

4 1 3
1 2 1 2 5 2
= 4 (10 + 2) 1 (4 3) + 3 ( 4 15)
= 48 1 57 = 10.
2. PROPERTIES OF DETERMINANTS
1. If two rows in a determinant are interchanged, the sign of the determinant changes. For
a b1
example, by interchanging the two rows of the determinant 1 , we get the determinant
a 2 b2
a2 b2
a1 b1
a2 b2 a b1
But we have = 1
a1 b1 a2 b2
2. If the numbers in one row are added, m times the numbers in another row, the value of the
determinant remains unaltered.
a1 ma2 b1 mb2 a b1
For example, 1
a2 b2 a2 b2
This rule can be extended to more number of rows for higher order determinants.
3. If rows and columns are interchanged, the value of the determinant remains unaltered.
a1 b1 a a2
For example, 1
a2 b2 b1 b2

DETERMINANTS TRAJECTORY EDUCATION
Another way of saying this is that it makes no difference if we reflect the numbers of the
determinant in the line of the principal diagonal. This means that any statement that can truly be
made about rows in particular results (1) and (2) can equally well be made about columns.
4. If all the numbers in any row are zeros, the value of the determinant is zero.
a1 b1 c1
For example, 0 0 0 0
a3 b3 c3
6. If the elements of a row are multiplied by any number m, the determinant is multiplied by m.
ma1 mb1 mc1 a1 b1 c1
For example, a 2 b2 c 2 m a2 b2 c2
a3 b3 c3 a3 b3 c3
7. Row-Column Operations : The value of determinant remains unchanged when any row (or
column) is multiplied by a number or any expression and then added or subtracted from
any other row (or column).

3. AREA OF A TRIANGLE
In earlier classes, we have studied that the area of triangle whose vertices are
x1, y 1 , x 2 , y 2 and x 3 , y 3 is given by the expression 1 [ x1 y 2 y 3 x 2 y 3 y 1 x 3 y 1 y 2 ] .
2
Now this expression can be written in the form of a determinant as
x1 y1 1
1
x2 y2 1 …(i)
2
x3 y3 1
Remarks
(i) Since area is a positive quantity, we always take the absolute value of the
determinant in (i).
(ii) If area is given, use both positive and negative values of the determinant for
calculation.
(iii) The area of the triangle formed by three collinear points is zero.

Let A = [aij]nn be any n n matrix. The transpose B of the matrix B = [Cij]nn, where Cij
denotes the cofactor of the element aij in the determinant | A |, is called the adjoint of the matrix A
and is denoted by the symbol adj A.
Illustration 8
Question: If A , then find adj A.
Solution: In | A |, the cofactor of is and the cofactor of is . Also the cofactor of is and the

If adj A B O , then system may be either consistent or inconsistent according as the
