A pair of rolls is to take a feed equivalent to sphere 38 mm in diameter and crush them to sphere having
a diameter of 12.7 mm. If the coefficient of friction is 0.29, what should be the diameter of the rolls?
Given:
a = 12.7 mm
b = 38 mm
𝜇= 0.29
Required:
r=?
Solution:
𝜇 = tan 𝛼
𝛼 = tan -1 (0.29) = 16.172
a = ½ of the distance between rolls
= 12.7/ 2 = 6.35 mm
b = radius of particles
= 38 / 2 = 19 mm
[Reference: Perry’s Hand Book]
(𝑟1 + 𝑎)
cos ∝ =
(𝑟1 + 𝑟2 )
(𝑟 + 6.35)
cos(16.172) =
(𝑟 + 19)
Therefore:
r1 = 300.686 mm
diameter of rolls = 2r = 2(300.686) = 601.372 mm
