Odd Semester 2021-2022 EndSem Exam. (5th Semester B.Tech. Chemical Engineering)
Course: CML 304 Chemical Reaction Engineering-II Date: 25/11/2021
Max. Marks: 35 Duration: 1.5 hr
Assume suitable data whenever necessary. Answers without formulae and intermediate steps will not carry
any marks. Write justification/explanation for the answer whenever require. Write all steps. Use standard
nomenclature. Answer sub questions together at one place.

1. We wish to lower the concentration of B in the liquid (Vl = 1.5 m3, CU = 50000 mol/m3) of an agitated
tank reactor by bubbling gas (Fg = 10000 mol/hr,  = 105 Pa) containing A (pAin = 1000 Pa) through it.
‘A’ and ‘B’ react as A(gl) + B(l)  Product(l) -rA’’’’ = kCACB How long must we bubble gas through the
vessel to lower the concentration from CB0 = 500 to CBf = 50 mol/m3?
Additional Data: k = 3 x 105 m3/mol.h, HA = 103 Pa.m3/mol, a = 100 m2/m3, kAga = 0.7 mol/(h.m3.Pa)
kAla = 150 h-1, fl = 0.8 m3 / m3 DA = DB = 4 x 10-6 m2 / h [6]

2. On changing the particle size from R to 3R the time needed for conversion of a particle becomes four
times. Determine the contribution of ash diffusion to the overall resistance for particle of size R. Neglect
gas film resistance. [3]

3. A solid feed consisting of 20 wt% of 1-mm particles and smaller, 30 wt% of 2-mm particles, 50 wt% of
4-mm particles passes through a rotating tubular reactor somewhat like a cement kiln where it reacts with
gas to give a hard nonfriable solid product (SCM/reaction control, T = 4 h for 4-mm particles). Find the
residence time needed for 100% conversion of solids. [1]

4. In a gas phase environment, particles of B are converted to solid products as : A(g) + B(s)  R(g) + S(s)
Reaction proceeds according to the SCM with reaction control and with time for complete conversion of
particle of 2 hr. A fluidized bed is to be designed to treat 1.5 ton/hr of solids to 95% conversion using a
stoichiomtric feed rate of A, fed at CAo. Find the weight of solids in the reactor if gas is assumed to be in
mixed flow. Note that the gas in the reactor is not at C Ao. [3]

5. The following kinetic data for A  B, CAO = 10 mol/m3 are obtained in an experimental Carberry type
basket reactor using 100 gm of catalyst in the paddles and different flow rates from run to run:
FAo, mol/min : 0.15 0.45 2.0 2.5
CA, mol/m3 : 8 6 4 2
Determine the amount of catalyst needed in a packed bed reactor for 80% conversion of 1000 molA/min
of a CAo = 15 mol/m3 feed [3]

6. The 1st order reaction heterogeneous catalytic reaction is taking place in bubbling fluidized bed with
effective rate constant = 0.9 m3/m3 cat.s, , weight of catalyst = 8000 kg, volumetric flowrate of reactant
gas = 1.5 m3/s, density of catalyst = 3000 kg/m3. Determine the conversion for fixed bed. [3]

7. A particular 1st order gas phase reaction, in absence of pore diffusion, proceeds at C A = 10-5 mol/cm3 with
-rA”’ = 10-6 mol/(s cm3) at 1 atm, 400OC. Determine size of spherical catalyst pellets that should be used
to insure that pore resistance effects do not intrude to slow the rate of reaction. De = 0.001 cm2/s. [3]
8. The following kinetic data on the reaction A  B are obtained in an experimental packed bed reactor
using various amounts of catalyst and a fixed feed rate FAO = 10 kmol/hr
W, kg catalyst : 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
XA : 0.12 0.2 0.27 0.33 0.37 0.41 0.44
(i) Find the reaction rate at 40% conversion
(ii) In designing a large packed bed reactor with feed rate FA0 = 400 kmol/hr having a very large recycle
of product stream, how much catalyst would be needed for 40% conversion. [3]

9. The flow pattern of gas through blast

furnaces was studied by injecting Kr-85 into
the air stream entering the tuyeres of the 688
m3 furnace. A sketch and listing of pertinent
quantities is shown in Fig. Assuming that the
small extent of axial dispersion model applies
to the flow of gas in the blast furnace,
compare D/ud for the top section of the blast
furnace with that expected in an ordinary
packed bed (D/ud ~ 0.5) and give the reason for obtained results. [2]

10. The second order aqueous reaction A + B  R + S is run in a large

tank reactor (V = 6 m3) and for an equimolar feed stream conversion of
reactants is 60%. Unfortunately, agitation in our reactor is rather
inadequate and tracer tests of the flow within the reactor give the flow
model sketched in Figure. What size of mixed flow reactor will equal the
performance of our present unit? (Assume C A0 = CB0 = 100 and v = 100 m3/hr) [2]

11. A liquid macrofluid reacts according to A→R as it flows through a

vessel. Find conversion of A for the flow patterns of Figure with C A0=1
mol/liter; -rA = kCA0.5; k=2 mol0.5/liter0.5.min [2]

12. An injected slug of tracer material flows with its carrier fluid down a long straight pipe in dispersed
plug flow. At point A in pipe spread of tracer is 20 m. At point B, 2 km downstream from A, its spread is
40 m. What do you estimate its spread to be at a point C, which is 2 km downstream from point B? [2]

13. A pulse of concentrated NaCl solution is introduced as tracer into the

fluid entering a vessel (V = 1 m3, v = 1 m3/min) and the concentration of tracer
is measured in the fluid leaving the vessel. Develop a flow model to represent
the vessel from the tracer output data sketched in Figure. [2]
