PROBLEM SET #2 – MATH 404
1. A thermometer is taken from a room that is 200C to the outdoors where the temperature is 50C. After
one minute, the thermometer reads 120C.
(a) What will the reading on the thermometer be after one more minute?
(b) When will the thermometer read 60C?
2. At midnight, with the temperature inside your house at 700F and the temperature outside at 200F, your
furnace breaks down. Two hours later, the temperature in your house has fallen to 500F. Assume that the
outside temperature remains constant at 200F. At what time will the inside temperature of your house
reach 400F?
3. A bacterial population B is known to have a rate of growth proportional to (B + 25). Between noon and
2PM the population increases to 3000 and between 2PM and 3PM the population is increased by 1000 in
culture. (a) Find an expression for the bacterial population B as a function of time. (b) What is the initial
bacterial population in the culture? (c) What is the total bacterial population in the culture at 4:15PM?
4. A radioactive material has an initial mass 100mg. After two years it is left to 75mg. Find the amount of
the material at any time. What is the period of its half-life?
5. A tank contains 80 gal/min of pure water. A brine solution with 2 lb/gal of salt enters at 2 gal/min and
the well stirred mixture leaves at the same rate. Find the amount of salt at t=5 mins.
6. A tank initially holds 100 gallons of brine solution containing 20 lbs of salt. At t=0, fresh water is
poured into the tank at the time rate of 5 gal/min, while the well-stirred mixture leaves the tank at the
same rate. Find the amount of salt in the tank at any time t.
7. A tank with a capacity of 1500 gals originally contains 1000 gals of fresh water. The first pipe
containing 1/2 lb of salt per gallon is entering at a rate of 4 gal/min. The second pipe containing 1/3 lb of
salt per gallon is entering at a rate of 6 gal/min. The mixture is allowed to flow out of the tank at a rate of
5 gal/min. Find the amount of salt in the tank at any time prior to the instant when the solution begins to
overflow.
Find (a) L(cos 2x), (b) L(esinx)
8. L = D2 + 4xD – 3x
9. L = D2 - e3xD
10. L = D2 + 4xD – x
11. L = e3xD2 – D
Find the general solution of the following homogeneous linear differential equations.
12. y” + 6y’ – 27y = 0
13. y’” – 2y” + 4y’ – 8y = 0
14. y” – 5y = 0
15. y(4) – y” – 6y = 0
