2. Welcome to CRJU 2450 Introduction to Corrections! I am glad you have joined this course and I look
forward to learning with you. This course meets as a seated section on Tuesdays and Thursdays 9:25 AM
to 10:40 AM in Room 114 and our first class begins Tuesday, August 20, 2019.

Throughout this course, we will be taking a close look at philosophy and history of corrections, various
correctional institutions, probation, parole and processes, and other components of the correctional
system. We will also leave space for analyzing contemporary corrections and comparative corrections
issues.

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

Critically analyze the past, present, and future correctional philosophies policies, procedures, and
practices
Examine and discuss the social and individual conditions/factors related to the punish of offenders
Examine the social responses to correctional practices

To meet the outcomes, you will engage various activities in and out of class that include, but are not
limited to reading assignments, quizzes/exams, reaction assignments and class discussions. The
syllabus is our road map to our class and it is very important you begin with reading it.

If you have any questions along the way, please know that you can reach out to me. Don't feel you
should not or don't feel it might not be a good question. I want you to ask questions! I want to help you
and my goal is your success. You may reach me via email at jwiley8@nccu.edu, by stopping by my office
(#309 in the Criminal Justice Building) during office hours or scheduling time to stop by, or you can call
my office at 919-530-6474. Please be sure to note the response times that can be found in the syllabus if
you call or email. I will do my best to respond before those time frames, however, please allow that time
line if needed.

For our Week 1 class session Tuesday (8/20/2019), we will spend some additional time reviewing the
syllabus and conducting introductions together before we dive into the class content for the semester. I
look forward to getting to know all of you and learning with you!
