राजानं प्रथमं विन्दे त्ततो भार्ाां ततो धनम् ।
राजन्यसवत लोकेऽस्मिन् कुतो भार्ाा कुतो धनम् ॥ १.१८९ ॥
One must first find a king (who will protect him). Only then he must find a wife and later
wealth. If he can not find a benevolent king, where is the question of wife and wealth.
अक्षरं विप्रहस्ते न मातृहस्ते न भोजनम् ।
भार्ाा हस्ते न ताम्बूलं राजहस्ते न कङ्कणम् ॥ २३
One should receive knowledge from a Brahmin (wise man), food at the hands of mother, betal
leaves (tamboolam) from one‟s wife and bracelet (recognition) from the king
र्था काष्ठं च काष्ठं च समे र्ातां महाणािे
समे त्य च व्यपेर्ातां कालमासाद्य कञ्चन ।
एिं भार्ाा श्च पुत्राश्च ज्ञातर्श्च धनावन च
समे त्य व्यिधािस्मि ध्रुिो ह्येषां विना भिः ॥

Just like how sticks floating in the sea come together for some time and later drift away, so is man’s
associations with his kin – wife, son, relatives and wealth. They may seem like it all came running
together for you. But you can be certain that you will have to part with them.

प्रीणाति य: सुचरििै: तिििं स िुत्रो
यद्भिुुिेव तिितिच्छति ित्कलत्रि्।
िन्मित्रिािति सुखे च सितियं
यिे ित्रयं जगति िुण्यकृिो लभन्ते॥
Indeed, a son is he who makes his father happy with his good deeds. The woman who is a
well-wisher of her husband is a wife in the real sense. A friend who remains alike in times of
happiness and misery, is a true friend. Verily, men obtain these three only as a result of their
good deeds.
आित्सु तित्रं जानीयाद्रणे शूििृणे शुतचि् ।
भायाां क्षीणेषु तवत्तेषु व्यसनेषु च बान्धवान् ॥
Aapatsu mitram jaaneeyaat, rane sooram mrune shuchim I
Bhaaryaa ksheeneshu vitteshu vyasaneshu cha bhandhavah II
Friend in difficulties, The powerful in war, In debt the virtuous, The wife in penury ,
And know relatives in calamities.
आपत्सु वमत्रं जानीर्ात् र्ुद्धे शूरमृ णे शु वचम् ।
भार्ाां क्षीणेषु वित्ते षु व्यसने षु च बान्धिान् ॥
सच्चे वमत्र की कसौटी आपवत्त में , शू र की र्ुद्ध में , पावित्र्य की ऋण में , पत्नी की वित्त जाने पर, और संबंधीर्ों की
कसौटी व्यसन में होती है ।
महताप्यथा सारे ण र्ो विश्ववसवत शत्रु षु ।
भार्ाा सु च विरक्तासु तदिं तस्य जीिनम् ॥ १.९२ ॥
यस्य िुत्रो वशीभूिो भायाु छन्दानुगातिनी।
तवभवे यस्य सन्तुतिस्तस्य स्वगु इिैव ति।। Chanakya neeti
He whose son is obedient to him, whose wife's conduct is in accordance with his
wishes, and who is content with his riches, has his heaven here on earth.
िे िुत्रा ये तििुभुक्ााः साः तििा यस्तु िोषकाः।
िन्मित्रं यत्र तवश्वासाः सा भायाु या तनवृतिाः।।
They alone are sons who are devoted to their father. He is a father who supports his
sons. He is a friend in whom we can confide, and she only is a wife in whose
company the husband feels contented and peaceful.
विद्या प्रिसतो वमत्रं भार्ाा वमत्रं गृहे सतः ।
आतुरस्य वभषक् वमत्रं दानं वमत्रं मररष्यतः ॥
vidyaa pravasato mitram bhaaryaa mitram grhe satah |
aaturasya bhishak mitram daanam mitram marishyatah ||
साथा ः प्रिसतो वमत्रं भार्ाा वमत्रं गृहे सतः ।
आतुरस्य वभषग् वमत्रं दानं वमत्रं मररष्यतः ॥
कां रिााँ प्रिासी का वमत्र है , पत्नी गृह में रहे नेिाले की वमत्र है , िैद्य रोगी का और दान मरते हुए मनु ष्य का (र्ा मत्या
मनु ष्य का) वमत्र है ।
वकं स्मित्प्रिसतो वमत्रं
वकं स्मिस्मित्रं गृहे सतः ।
आतुरस्य च वकं वमत्रं
वकं स्मिस्मित्रं मररष्यतः ॥ ४४
Who is the friend of the traveller?
Who is the companion of the householder?
Who is the friend of the ailing?
Who is the companion of a man on his deathbed?
साथा ः प्रिसतो वमत्रं
भार्ाा वमत्रं गृहे सतः ।
आतुरस्य वभषवित्रं
दानं वमत्रं मररष्यतः ॥ ४५
The caravan is the friend of the traveller
The companion of the householder is his wife
The doctor is the friend of the ailing
The companion of a man on his deathbed is dana
तकं न्मस्विात्मा िनुष्यस्य
तकं न्मस्वद्दै वकृिाः सखा ।
उपजीिनं वकं स्मिदस्य
वकं स्मिदस्य परार्णम् ॥ ५०
What is the atma of man?
Who is the divinely created friend?
What is the main support for one’s life?
What is the chief refuge for a person?
िुत्र आत्मा िनुष्यस्य
भायाु िै वकृिाः सखा ।
उपजीिनं च पजान्यो
दानम् अस्य परार्णम् ॥ ५१
The son is the atma of man
The divinely created friend is the wife
Rain is the main support for one’s life
The chief refuge for a person is dana.
सा भार्ाा र्ा वप्रर्ं ब्रूते स पुत्रो र्त्र वनिृावत्तः ।
तस्मित्रं र्त्र विश्वासः सदे शो र्त्र जीव्यते ॥
sA bhAryA yA priyam brUte sa putro yatra nir vRuttiH ।
tat mitram yatra vishvAsaH sa desho yatra jIvyate ॥
he is a wife who will keep the husband happy and does not speak harshly to him. A son is
one who does not give troubles to his father. A friend is one who can be trusted. Your nation
is one you live in (at present).
सा भार्ाा र्ा वप्रर्ं बूरते
् स पुत्रो र्त्र वनिॄवत: |
तस्मित्रं र्त्र विश्वास: स दे शो र्त्र जीव्यते ||
The one who speaks in a sweet language is a real wife to any man; from whom one gets happiness
and satisfaction is a real son/daughter; on whom we can put our complete faith without any
hesitation is a real friend; and the land in which we can easily earn our livelihood is the real country.
The way to understand this subhashita is not by validating our wife, son, friend or country on the
above specified parameters but by seeing if we personally have the qualities mentioned by the
subhashitakar! As for the country it can be said that from the government's point-of-view it is it's
duty to see that every person has work and can easily earn his livelihood, but from the citizen's
point-of-view it should no doubt be like "Ask not what the country has done for you, but ask what
you have done for the country"!
स्वकिुधिाुतजुिजीतविानां
शास्त्रेषु िािे षु सिा ििानाि् ।
तजिेंतद्रयाणाितितितप्रयाणां
गृिेऽति िोक्षाः िुरुषोत्तिानाि् ॥
sva karma dharma arjita jIvitAnAm shAstreShu dAreShu sadA ratAnAm ।
jitendriyANAm atithi priyANAm gRuhe api mokShaH puruShottamAnAm ॥
It is salvation right in the middle of running household for those who - earn their
living by doing moral acts only, who are always in the company of scriptures or their
wives, who have their senses under their control and who loves to serve guests.
तवद्या तित्रं प्रवासेषु भायाु तित्रं गॄिेषु च |
व्यातधिस्यौषधं तित्रं धिाुेे तित्रं िॄिस्य च ||

Knowledge is (your) friend in the journey, wife is the friend at home, drug is (like) friend in illness
and dharma is the friend after death.
तवद्या तित्रं प्रवासेषु भायाु तित्रं गृिेषु च ।
व्यातधिस्यौषधं तित्रं धिो तित्रं िृिस्य च ॥
Vidyaa mitram pravaaseshu bhaaryaa maataa mitram griheshu cha
Vyaadhitasyaushadham mitram dharmo mitram mritasya cha
For one in an alien land learning is friend, for one staying at home wife is friend , for
one suffering from illness medicine is friend and for the departed souls dharma is
friend.
सा भार्ाा र्ा वप्रर्ं बूरते

यस्य भायाु गॄिे नान्मस्त साध्वी च तप्रायवातिनी I
अिण्यं िेन गन्तव्यं यिाऽिण्यं ििा गॄिि् II
A person whose wife lacks the good conduct and pleasing words , such a person
should leave home and go to forest because for him, there should be no difference
between a forest and his own home!
िु िा भायाु शठं तित्रं भृत्यश्चोत्तििायकाः।
ससिे गृिे वासो िृत्युिेव न संशयाः।। Chanakya
A wicked wife, a false friend, a saucy servant and living in a house with a serpent in it
are nothing but death.
पुनविात्तं पुनवमा त्रं पुनभाा र्ा पुनमाही ।
एतत् सिां पुनला भ्यं न शरीरं पुनः पुनः ॥34॥
सा भार्ाा र्ा वप्रर्ं बूरते
् स पुत्रो र्त्र वनिॄवत: ।
तस्मित्रं र्त्र विश्वास: स दे शो र्त्र जीव्यते ॥
र्स्य पुत्रो िशीभू तो भार्ाा छन्दानु गावमनी। विभिे र्स्य सिुविस्तस्य िगा इहै ि वह ॥
भािाथा :
वजसका पुत्र िशीभू त हो, पत्नी िेदों के मागा पर चलने िाली हो और जो िैभि से सिुि हो, उसके वलए र्हीं िगा है ।
जानीर्ात्सं गरे भृ त्यान् बां धिान् व्यसनागमे ।
आपत्काले षु वमत्रावण भार्ाां च विभिक्षर्े ॥
jAnIyAt sangare bhRutyAn bAndhavAn vyasanAgame ।
aapatkAleShu mitrANi bhAryA cha vibhavakShaye ॥
One knows the true character of a servant during war, of relatives when you get sick, of
friends when you are in trouble and of your wife when you have lost all money (and fortune).
त्यजे द् धमां दर्ा-हीनं विद्या-हीनं गुरं त्यजे त् ।
त्यजे त् क्रोध-मु खी ं भार्ाां वनःस्नेहान् बान्धिां स् त्यजे त् ।।४
त्यजेद्धिु ियािीनं तवद्यािीनं गुरुं त्यजेि्।
त्यजेत्क्रोधिुखी भायाु तनाःस्नेिान्बान्धवांस्यजेि्।।
That man who is without religion and mercy should be rejected. A guru without
spiritual knowledge should be rejected. The wife with an offensive face should be
given up, and so should relatives who are without affection.
सा भार्ाा र्ा सुवचदक्षा सा भार्ाा र्ा पवतव्रता। सा भार्ाा र्ा पवतप्रीता सा भार्ाा सत्यािावदनी।।
She is a true wife who is clean (suci), expert, chaste, pleasing to the husband, and truthful.
न भायुया सिं तित्रं न च धिो ियासिाः ।
न स्वािंत्र्यसिं सौख्यं गािुस्थ्यान्नाश्रिो विाः ॥
na bhAryayaa samam mitram na cha dharmo dayA samaH ।
na svAtantrya samam saukhyam gArhasthyaat na aashramo varaH ॥
There is no better friend than a wife. No dharma better than compassion. Nothing
better than being free. No state of life is better than running a household .
आपदथे धनं रक्षे द् दारान् रक्षेद् धनै रवप।
आत्मानं सततं रक्षे द् दारै रवप धनै रवप ॥
दु िा भार्ाा शठं वमत्रं भृ त्यश्चोत्तरदार्कः ।
ससपे च गृहे िासो मृ त्युरेि न संशर्ः ॥
duShTA bhAryaa shaTham mitraM bhRutyaH cha uttaradAyakaH ।
sasarpe cha gRuhe vAsaH mRutyureva na saMshayaH ॥ Garuda purana
Death is certain (soon) for a person whose wife is wicked, whose friends cheat and whose
servants talk back to him. He is in same level of danger as sleeping in a house which has
snakes in it.
कुग्रामिासः कुलहीनसेिा कुभोजनं क्रोधमुखी च भार्ाा ।
पुत्रश्च मूखो विधिा च कन्या विनाऽविना षट् प्रदहस्मि कार्म् ।।CHANAKYA
याः प्रीणयेि् सुचरििैाः तिििं स िुत्राः
यि् भिुुिेव तिितिच्छति ित्कलत्रि् ।
िन्मित्रिािति सखे च सितियं यि्
एित्त्रयं जगति िुण्यकृिो लभन्ते ॥
A good son is one who makes his father happy (by being obedient, follow dharma). A good
wife is one who always keeps the interest of her husband in her mind. A good friend is one
who does not change his mind when you are in trouble. Only people who have done good
deeds in the past will get these in this world.
न भार्ार्ा समं वमत्रं न च धमो दर्ासमः ।
न िातंत्र्यसमं सौख्यं गाहा स्थ्यान्नाश्रमो िरः ॥

should leave home and go to forest because for him, there should be no difference between a forest
and his own home!
विद्या वमत्रं प्रिासेषु भार्ाा वमत्रं गॄहेषु च |
व्यावधतस्योषधं वमत्रं धमो वमत्रं मॄतस्य च ||
Knowledge is a friend during travel. Wife is a friend in home. Medicines are the friends during illness
and our good deeds (Dharma) are friends after death!
राजानां प्रथमं विन्दे त्ततो भार्ाां ततो धनं |
राजन्यसवत लोकस्य कुतो भार्ाा कुतो धनं ||
raajaanaam prathamam vindettato bhaaryaam tato dhanam |
raajanyasati lokasya kuto bhaaryaa kuto dhanam ||

वपताचार्ाः सुहृिाता भार्ाा पुत्रः पुरोवहतः |
नादण्ड्यो नाम राज्ञोऽस्मस्त र्ः िधमे न वतष्ठवत ||
pitaacaaryah suhrnmaataa bhaaryaa putrah purohitah |
naadandyo naama raajo'sti yah svadharme na tishthati ||
आिताः संशर्ानामविनर्भु िनं पत्तनं साहसानां ।
दोषाणां सवन्नधानं कपटर्िनं क्षेत्रमप्रत्यर्ानां ।।
िगादारस्य विघ्नं नरकपुरमु खं सिामार्ाकरं डं ।
स्त्रीर्ंत्रं केन सृिं विषममृ तमर्ं प्रावणनां मोहपाशः ।।
