Chapter 11: Application Software

Application software, also known as an application or an "app", is computer software designed


to help the user to perform specific tasks. Application software is contrasted with system
software and middleware, which manage and integrate a computer's capabilities, but typically
do not directly apply them in the performance of tasks that benefit the user. The system
software serves the application, which in turn serves the user.()Application software is usually
designed for end users and most are user friendly. Application software applies the power of a
particular computing platform or system software to a particular purpose. There are many ways

Personal software Personal software can range from cooking/ self help software to tax
preparation software. Personal software is very similar to specialty software, but the personal
software is usually more of a general application.
Education/ reference software
Educational software is computer software, the primary purpose of which is teaching or self-
learning. Education software comes in many different types like Courseware-which describe
additional educational material intended as kits for teachers or trainers or as tutorials for
students, usually packaged for use with a computer. Another type of education software is
assessment software- primary purpose of assessing and testing students in a virtual
environment. This type allows students to complete tests and examinations using a computer,
usually networked. Lastly, reference software, which emulates and expands upon print
reference forms including the dictionary, translation dictionary, encyclopedia, thesaurus, and
atlas.
