TERMS AND DEFINITIONS

Multi-layers fabric: Component having more than one textile layer. The middle of component can be
composed with membrane, polymer layer, foam, or glue point process… but the top and bottom of component
must be textile layers.

Textile (Fur) layer

Inside both textile layers: PU membrane

Textile (woven) layer

Example of multi-layers component

Example of delamination by hand

Delamination Strength: Strength (expressed in N per surface unit) needs to break the cohesion between two
layers by using a dynamometer.

SCOPE

This method is to be applied on any multi-layers component (soft shell, shoes complexes, underwear
complex …).

OBJECTIVES

Measure the strength need to separate two layers (delamination phenomenon).

PRINCIPLE

Delamination is initiated by peeling off by hand. Tape is placed into a dynamometer to determine the peeling
strength of the multi-layers.

REQUIREMENTS ON EQUIPMENT & CONSUMABLES

• A tensile testing machine that automatically records the determined peeling strength (resolution of a
displaying device must be 0,5 N*) at a constant speed of 200 ± 10 mm/min
* the record value defined by dynamometer must be automatically rounded to 0,5 N.

• Tensile machine with sensors 1 KN or 100N

• The clamping or holding devices shall be positioned with the centre in line with the applied force. The
machine shall be calibrated with the grips in position and the jaw faces closed, where applicable.

The jaws shall be capable of holding the test specimen without allowing it to slip and designed so
that they do not cut or otherwise weaken the test specimen.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Specimens to test have to be conditioned, after cutting in the standard atmospheric condition during at least
12h. The test must be carried out at 20±2°C and 65± 4% RH

SAMPLE PREPARATION

Cut 6 specimens with a dimension of 75±5 mm for all multi-layer and 50±5 mm just for underwear’s fabric
width and at least 200 mm length, 3 in the warp direction and 3 in the weft direction. Mark the sample of the
direction.
The cutting must be done very precisely by following the yarn direction and be parallel to it.

Note: In other case, due to not enough component or sample take from a finish good, please follow the
instruction of the applicant for the sample preparation.
For Underwear finished product, refer to appendix 1.

On the 6 specimens, draw two lines, the first one at 20±2 mm from one of the edge (in blue, picture 2) and
the second one, at least 100 mm from the first (blue) line (in red).

Picture 2: Measurement for the line drawing

Initiate the peel off by hand where the bond between 2 layers break first, until the drawn line (in red)
before to condition on a flat surface. (Refer picture 2). The distance between the red line and the edge is the
distance needed to properly attach the specimen between the jaws.

TEST PROTOCOL REQUIREMENTS

Wedge the “manually peel off parts” of the sample into the jaws. (Refer picture 3).
the separation line between the two fabrics of complex must be equal to the distance between two jaws
jaws.

One textile layer only

Equal distance

One layer or more (textile layer + foam or

membrane or glue…)

Jaws of tensile machine

Peel off the sample at a constant speed at 200±10

±10 mm/min until the second draw line (in blue) which mean
“end of the test”.

Save the 3 samples for warp direction in one batch, and the 3 samples for weft direction in another batch.

TION OF THE RESULTS

REQUIREMENTS ON EVALUATION

Calculation of the strength adhesion average in N for each direction (warp and weft):
Samples have to be totally pill-off
off between marks defined (between red line and blue line, refer picture 4).

The delamination strength

gth average must be calculated as described follow:

1- Eliminate the first (10+/- 2) % of lengthening of the graph (D area on picture 4).

2- For each sample ( warp and weft ) calculate the average

a A (in N) of : the 40 maximum peaks (A1) and
the 40 minimum valleys (A2) strength values to determine the sample delamination strength

A=
( A1 + A2)
2
3- Calculate the delamination strength Average/cm
Average (CA in N/cm) of the fabric for the 3 samples or less in
particular case (as finished good) for warp and weft direction, and the standard deviation (σCA in N/cm),
with accuracy at 0.01 N:

Appendix 1 : SAMPLE PREPARATION FOR UNDERWEAR FINISH GOODS

1. Bottom (underpants, boxer ..)

The specimen is taken at the waist of the underpants, not the thigh of the underpants.
Cut at least 2 specimens.
Cut the specimens from the stitching(s) of the waist in order to take off the strip only. The width is the exact
width of the complex area, ultra-sonic cutting included.
Peel off by hand the strip (around 20-30mm) from the stitching and wedge the specimen into the jaws.

The specimen is taken at the back of the bra, just after the seam of the hook, at the bottom.
Cut at least 2 specimens per FG: one at the right, one at the left.
The width is the exact width of the complex area, ultra-sonic cutting included. The length must be specified
by the customer.
