1. Explain the basic components of pneumatic system
Ans: The basic components of pneumatic system are,
i. Compressoer
ii. Pressure gauge
iii. Filter, Regulator , lubricator.
iv. Direction control valve
v. Cylinder
2. What are the types of compressor
3. What is the function of a compressor
Ans:An air compressor is a machine that uses an electric motor or gas engine to power a device that sucks
in successive volumes of air from the atmosphere, compresses (squeezes) each volume of air in a confined
place to increase its pressure by making the volume smaller, and then transfers the high-pressure air to a
receiver tank
4. What is the function of FRL unit
Ans:FILTER:This component is used to eliminate vapour particles, dust, solid particles, corrosive gasses,
oil vapours etc from the air
PRESSURE REGULATOR:Enables the regulation, reduction and stabilization of the air pressure in the
pneumatic circuit; adapting it to the requirements of the equipment to be supplied.
LUBRICATOR:Under normal working conditions Pneumax equipment does not require additional
lubrication. Only in specific conditions, and in cases where the prelubrication applied to the sliding
components during production is removed , is it necessary to use additional lubrication. The air that
passess through the lubricator automatically draws , via a venturi, which subsequently deposist on the
pneumatic equipment internals. The lubricator is ideally mounted as close as possible to the components

5. Drrrraw the symbol of FRL unit
Ans:
6.What is the function of direction control valve
Ans: Directional control valves are one of the most fundamental parts in hydraulic machinery as well and
pneumatic machinery. They allow fluid flow into different paths from one or more sources

Directional control valve (2 ports / 2 positions)
-Normally closed directional control valve with 2 ports and 2 finite
positions.
-Normally open directional control valve with 2 ports and 2 finite
positions.
Directional control valve (3 ports / 2 positions)
-Normally closed directional control valve with 3 ports and 2 finite
positions.
-Normally open directional control valve with 3 ports and 2 finite
positions.
Directional control valve (4 ports / 2 positions)
-directional control valve with 4 ports and 2 finite positions
Directional control valve (4 ports / 3 positions)
-directional control valve with 4 ports and 3 finite positions
*-(center position can have various flow paths)
Directional control valve (5 ports / 2 positions) Normally a pneumatic valve
-directional control valve with 5 ports and 2 finite positions
Directional control valve (5 ports / 3 positions) Normally a pneumatic valve
-directional control valve with 5 ports and 3 finite positions
8. What are the advantages of pneumatic system?
Ans: Advantages of pneumatics:
Simplicity of Design And Control: Machines are easily designed using standard cylinders & other
components. Machines operate by simple ON - OFF type control.
Reliability: Pneumatic systems tend to have long operating lives and require very little maintenance.

ELECTROPNEUMATICS LAB VIVA QUESTION – ANSWERS
Because gas is compressible, the equipment is less likely to be damaged by shock. The gas in pneumatics
absorbs excessive force, whereas the fluid of hydraulics directly transfers force.
Storage: Compressed gas can be stored, allowing the use of machines when electrical power is lost.
Safety: Very low chance of fire (compared to hydraulic oil).Machines can be designed to be overload safe.
9. What are the types of flow control valves in pneumatic system
Ans:
Throttle valve
-adjustable output flow
Flow Control valves
-Flow control valve with fixed output (variations in inlet pressure do not
affect rate of flow)
-Flow control valve with fixed output and relief port to reservoir with relief
for excess flow (variations in inlet pressure do not affect rate of flow)
-Flow control valve with variable output
-Flow control valve with fixed orifice
-Flow control valve with metered flow toward right free flow to left
-Flow control valve with pressure compensated flow control fixed output
flow regardless of load
-Flow control valve with pressure and temperature compensated
-Flow control valve with variable output and relief port to reservoir
10.What is the function of time delay valve?
Ans: The time delay valve is actuated by a pneumatic signal at port 12 after a preset time
delay has elapsed. It is returned to the normal position via return spring when the
signal is removed. The time delay is infinitely adjustable by means of a regulating
screw.

ELECTROPNEUMATICS LAB VIVA QUESTION – ANSWERS
13.Write the symbol of twin pressure valve
14.What is the function of solenoid valve
Ans: Solenoid valves are the most frequently used control elements in fluidics. Their tasks are to shut off,
release, dose, distribute or mix fluids. They are found in many application areas. Solenoids offer fast and
safe switching, high reliability, long service life, good medium compatibility of the materials used, low
control power and compact design.
15.What the symbols P A R represent I DCV
Ans: P- The supply line from compressor
A- working port
R- return Valve
16. What are the types of cylinders in pneumatics.
Ans:
Single acting cylinder return by spring
Single acting cylinder return by external force
Double acting cylinder Single piston rod (fluid required to extend and retract)
17. What is the difference between single acting and double acting cylinder
Ans: In single acting system there is only one port is provided for the extension stroke and retraction takes
by the spring action and in double acting cylinder there are two ports for supply and retraction.
18. What are the applications of pneumatic system
The application of pneumatic systems is very extensive. The following are some examples. The pneumatic
system used in,
Vehicle door operation system
Transport system
In small robot for pick and place
In hand drill
In tightening nut and bolt
Riveting hammer
Air breaker
Railway wagons

19. Write the symbol used 3/2 pilot operated DCV
20.What do you mean by electro pneumatic?
Ans:Pneumatic control systems using electricity as actuating medium is termed as electro pneumatics.
21. What is relay
Ans:A relay is an electrically operated switch. Many relays use an electromagnet to operate a switching
mechanism mechanically, but other operating principles are also used. Relays are used where it is
necessary to control a circuit by a low-power signal (with complete electrical isolation between control and
controlled circuits), or where several circuits must be controlled by one signal. The first relays were used in
long distance telegraph circuits, repeating the signal coming in from one circuit and re-transmitting it to
another. Relays were used extensively in telephone exchanges and early computers to perform logical
operations.
22. What are types of switches found in electro pneumatic
Ans. There are twot ypes switches
a) Normally open
b) Normally closed
23.What is the function of sensor
A sensor is a device which receives and responds to a signal when touched. A sensor's sensitivity indicates
how much the sensor's output changes when the measured quantity changes.
24.What is the function of air motor
Ans: A pneumatic motor or compressed air engine is a type of motor which does mechanical work by
expanding compressed air. Pneumatic motors generally convert the compressed air to mechanical work
through either linear or rotary motion. Linear motion can come from either a diaphragm or piston actuator,
while rotary motion is supplied by either a vane type air motor or piston air motor.
