Led and Lighting Qualities: Dipl.-Ing. Peter Dehoff

This document is an email from Peter Dehoff, an Austrian representative to CEN TC 169 and president of CIE Austria, about LED and lighting qualities. It discusses how LED lighting has progressed from small decorative light sources to being able to light nearly every application. It notes that while existing lighting quality criteria still apply, some new ones like disability glare from small bright sources and multiple shadows are emerging. Standards like EN 12464 on lighting of workplaces will take up new LED requirements. Long lifetime is an important argument for LED apart from efficacy, and manufacturers should provide consistent lifetime data. For lighting design, maintenance factors are also important, and a table was developed for LED luminaires modeled on those for conventional sources.

LED AND LIGHTING QUALITIES

LED has entered interior lighting. It started years ago with small light sources with only limited output. LED
was decorative. Then spotlights and tasklights showed up, followed by downlight. Downlights with LED today
have left those with compact fluorescents far behind, even on a price scale. Now nearly each application can
be lit by LED. Even very strong industrial high bay luminaires are offered.
What is the difference between lighting with LED and lighting with conventional lamps? All quality criteria
used up to now are valid but some new are approaching /1/. One is the small but very bright size which may
cause even disability glare. Others are multiple shadows when many point light sources appear, colour
rendering and harsh modelling. Some examples will be given. Standards like EN 12464 “Lighting of
workplaces” will take up new requirements.
A very important argument for LED, apart from their efficacy, is the long life time. IEC is defining the relevant
parameters in the draft standards like IEC 62717. It is important that manufacturers deliver data so that
apples can be compared with apples. ZVEI has published a guide /2/ which explains the relevant data and
proposes a datasheet.
For lighting design the maintenance of a lighting installation is also an issue. Life time data as f.e. L70 at
50.000 h (lumen output after 50,000 h is 70% of the initial value) very often is not helpful. A maintenance
factor for the LED module or LED luminaire of 0,70 or less may be useless if the installation is maintained
before that schedule. For that reason a table for LLMF (lamp lumen maintenance factors) and LSF (lamp
survival factors) – which are defined in /3/- a maintenance factor -table was developed which can be used
as those known for conventional light sources.
