UNIT I

1. Find the x and y components of each force and determine the resultant
and direction PG NO 31

2. The forces shown in the figure below are in equilibrium. Determine the forces
F1 and F2 PG NO 43
3.A stake is pulled out of the ground by means of two ropes as shown.

Knowing that the tension in one rope is 120 N, determine by

trigonometry the magnitude and direction of the force P so that the

resultant is a vertical force of 160 N. PG NO 44

4. Forces 2, √ , 5, √ and 2 kN respectively act at one of the angular points of a

regular hexagon towards five other angular points. Determine the magnitude
and direction of the resultant force.

5. Determine the tension in the cables AB and AD. Mass of engine is 250 kg.
PG NO 83
6. In a jib crane, the jib and the tie rod are 5 m and 4 m long respectively. the
height of crane post in 3 m and the ties red remains horizontal. Determine the
forces produced in jib and tie rod when a load of 2 kN in suspended at the crane
head. PG NO 91

7. Two identical rollers each of weight 50N are supported by an inclined plane
and a vertical wall as shown in fig. Find the reactions at the points of supports
A, B, and C. PG NO 68

8. A tower guy wire shown below is anchored by means of a bolt at A

as shown. The tension in the wire is 2500kN. Determine
a) The components Fx,Fy & Fz of the force acting on the bolt
b) The angles _x, _y, _z defining the direction of the force. PG NO 124
9. Members OA, OB and OC form a three member space truss. A weight of
10 KN is suspended at the joint ‘O’ as shown in fig. Determine the
magnitude and nature of forces in each of the three members of the truss
PG NO 122

10. A force F acts at the origin of a coordinate system in a direction defined by

the angles and . if the component of the force F along y
direction is -174 N, determine the

a) Angle
b) other components of force
c) magnitude of the force F

11. A roller of radius r = 300 mm and weight 2000 N is to be pulled over a curb
of height150 mm by a horizontal force P applied to the end of a string wound
tightly around the circumference of the roller. Find the magnitude of P required
to start the roller move over the curb. What is the least pull P through the centre
of the wheel to just turn the roller over the curb?

12. Two cylinders, A of weight 4000 N and B of weight 2000 N rest on smooth
inclines as shown in Fig. They are connected by a bar of negligible weight
hinged to each cylinder at its geometric centre by smooth pins. Find the force P
to be applied as shown in the figure such that it will hold the system in the given
position.
