Statics of Particles in Plane

Resultant of two force in plane (parallelogram law)

1) Two forces P and Q are applied as shown at point A of a hook

support. Knowing that P = 75 N and Q = 125 N, determine the
magnitude and direction of their resultant using the
parallelogram law.

2) A trolley that moves along a horizontal beam is acted upon by

two forces as shown.
(a) Knowing that  = 25°, determine the magnitude of the force
P so that the resultant force exerted on the trolley is vertical.
(b) What is the corresponding magnitude of the resultant?

3) Two forces F1 and F2 are applied at a hook support as shown.

Determine the magnitude and direction of their resultant using
the parallelogram law.

4) Determine the magnitude of the resultant force acting on the

screw eye and its direction measured clockwise from the x axis.

5) Two forces act on the hook. Determine the magnitude of the

resultant force.

6) Determine the magnitude of the resultant force and its
direction, measured counterclockwise from the positive x axis
for:
a) The two forces F1 and F2.
b) The two forces F2 and F3.
c) All forces F1, F2 and F3.

7) Determine the magnitude of the resultant force and its direction

measured counterclockwise from the positive x axis.

8) Determine the magnitude and orientation  of FB so that the

resultant force is directed along the positive y axis and has a
magnitude of 1500 N.

Rectangular component of forces in plane
1) Determine the x and y components of each of the forces
shown.

2) Knowing that  = 35°, determine the resultant of the three

forces shown.

3) Resolve each force acting on the post into its x and y

components.

4) If the resultant force acting on the bracket is to be 750 N

directed along the positive x axis, determine the magnitude of
F and its direction .

5) Determine the magnitude of the resultant force and its direction

 measured counterclockwise from the positive x axis.

6) Resolve each force acting on the gusset plate into its x and y
components and express each force as a Cartesian vector.
Determine the magnitude and direction of the resultant force
acting on the plate and its direction, measured
counterclockwise from the positive x axis.

4
7) Determine the magnitude and direction measured
counterclockwise from the positive x axis of the resultant force
of the three forces acting on ring A.
Take F1 = 500 N and  = 20o.

8) Knowing that  = 40°, determine the resultant of the three

forces shown.

Equilibrium of Particle in Plane
1) The 200-kg crate in Figure is suspended using the ropes
AB and AC. Each rope can withstand a maximum force of
10 kN before it breaks. If AB always remains horizontal,
determine the smallest angle  to which the crate can be
suspended before one of the ropes breaks.

2) The block has a mass of 5 kg and rests on the smooth

plane. Determine the unstretched length of the spring.

3) The spring has a stiffness of k = 800 N/m and an

unstretched length of 200 mm. Determine the force in
cables BC and BD when the spring is held in the position
shown.

4) The springs BA and BC each have a stiffness of 500 N/m

and an unstretched length of 3 m. Determine,
a) the horizontal force F applied to the cord which is
attached to the small ring B so that the
displacement of the ring from the wall is d = 1.5 m.
b) the displacement d of the cord from the wall when
a force F = 175 N is applied to the cord.

5) Two cables are tied together at C and are loaded as shown.
Determine the tension (a) in cable AC, (b) in cable BC.

6) Knowing that  = 20°, determine the tension (a) in cable

AC, (b) in rope BC.

7) Collar A is connected as shown to a 50 N load and can

slide on a frictionless horizontal rod. Determine,
- the magnitude of the force P required to maintain the
equilibrium of the collar when (a) x =0.5 m, (b) x =1.5 m.
- the distance x for which the collar is in equilibrium when
P = 48 N.

8) Two forces P and Q are applied as shown to an aircraft

connection. Knowing that the connection is in equilibrium
and that the magnitudes of the forces exerted on rods A
and B are FA = 750 N and FB = 400 N, determine the
magnitudes of P and Q.
