II. Subject Matter
A. UNIT 1: LIVING THINGS AND THEIR ENVIRONMENT
B. Chapter: Integumentary System
C. Topics:
Healthful habits that promote the proper functioning of Nervous system
D. Concepts:
NERVOUS SYSTEM
Nervous system – The system that receives information from your environment
and controls how you react. It is the communication network and control center of
the body.
FUNCTIONS OF NERVOUS SYSTEM
To collect sensory input from the body and external environment.
To process and interpret the sensory input.
To respond appropriately to the sensory input.
Central Nervous System – Spinal cord, brain and peripheral nerves.
Parts of the Nervous System
1. Brain – The largest and most complex part of the nervous system.
Brain stem
Midbrain – serves as a pathway, it controls reflexes related to sight and hearing.
Medulla oblongata – it is a very important part of the nervous system because it
puts you in the state of consciousness. It controls the respiration, regulate the
heartbeat and causes blood vessels to contract or expand.
Pons – is the bulge In the brain above the medulla oblongata. It controls the
motor conduction paths connecting the cerebral cortex to the cerebellar
hemisphere.
Cerebellum
- Is the unconscious motor coordinator center of the brain responding to
reflexes.
- It helps in balancing the body whether it is standing, walking or lying down.
Cerebrum
- The largest part of the brain.
- Each hemisphere has four parts or lobes (frontal, parietal, temporal, occipital
lobes)
Gray matter – is a major component of the central nervous system consisting of
nerve cells, dendrites, axons and supporting cells which are known as neuroglia.
It is known as the cerebral cortex.
2. Spinal Cord
- Is a long, cylindrical mass of nerve tissues that passes through the spinal
canal.
Funiculi – distinct bundles of nerve fibers that form columns
Anterior – the nerve fibers in front
Lateral – nerves at the side
Posterior – nerves at the back.
Meninges – Provide a framework that supports and protects the brain and spinal cord.
Pia mater – serves as a supporting cover for the brain and spinal cord and also
carries the blood vessels that supply the outer surfaces of these two areas.
Arachnoid membrane – acts as a cushion that protects the brain and spinal cord
from injury.
Durameter – its inner layer forms a partition that dips between the larger
subdivision of the brain.
3. Nerves
- The basic unit of nervous system.
Neuron – consist of a cell body containing a nucleus and 2 kinds of fine
threadlike branches – the dendrites and axons. Carry fast moving electrical
signals.
Sensory neurons – carry signals from different parts of the body to your brain and
spinal cord.
Motor neurons – carry signals from different parts of the body to your muscles to
make them contract.
Association neurons – pass signals to motor neurons and send messages to
brain.
Myelin – fatty substance that cover some neurons, this helps make the signal
travel faster.
Synapse – tiny saps between neurons

DERMIS PORES NAILS HAIR
_________1. It is the outer layer of the skin, it helps to protect the skin.
_________2. Are the openings that allows sweat to reach the surface.
_________3. The strands of hair that grow within the dermis.
_________4. The inner layer of the skin, it is above the layer of fat.
_________5. It consists of the skin, hair, nails, glands, and nerves. Its main
function is to act as a barrier to protect the body from the outside world.
