SESSION 1 SURVEY
Before we start this lesson, let’s take a moment to interact with our
classmates. Go around the classroom and survey at least 3 people using the
following questions
·Have you ever asked for advice about your academic life?
If so, what advice have you been given?
·What things you think you can do in the future to improve
your English?
·Can you think of something that does not allow you to
improve in your academic life?
·What advice could you give to freshmen students?
·Do you have a personal diary to organise your
activities? If not, would you have one?
01 READ AND LISTEN TO THE
FOLLOWING TEXT
Hi, my name is Camilo and I am a student of the programme, just
as you are. As many of you, I have always wondered how I can
improve my academic life and my English proficiency. In several
occasions, I have thought that if I were a native English speaker, I
would not have to worry about a lot of things; but that is not my
case. Therefore, I needed to ask for advice to those who were in
upper semesters and professors. When I asked other classmates for
advice, they told me that if I listened to music in English, that
would help me enrich my vocabulary, and so I did.
When I asked professors for tips, they told me that if I went to all
the lectures the programme throws, I would highly improve my
receptive abilities; and now I go whenever I can. What is more, a
professor told me that, I would have an easier academic life if I
created a personal study schedule to manage my time; some even
recommended me buying a diary.
There are many tips that can help you. However, if you asked me
what is the best way of improving, I would say it is practice and
dedication. In the end, you will see all the effort is worth.
Now that you have read the text, please
complete the following items as fully as
possible.

If I can go back in time and choose my major again, I would
probably choose a different one. It is not that I do not like this, it is
just that I am keen on so many things I would go for something
new. To be honest, I think I will go for physics and maths even if it
meaning retaking my old high school books back with me. I love
the idea of understanding how things move and behave in the
way they do. Moreover, if it isn’t for the physicists we wouldn’t
have many indispensable devices like the MRI scanner or the
internet. I know it may sound crazy now; but if I having a time
machine, I would not hesitating to go back and chose physics
instead.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
The second conditional uses the past simple after if, then 'would' and the
infinitive:
if + past simple, ...would + infinitive
It is used for several things. First, we can use it to talk about things in the
future that are probably not going to be true; like a dream or a desire. Second,
it can be used to hypothesise things in the present that we know are not real;
like saying "If I were you". Third, it can be used to give advices about changes
