Airless Tyres /Non-Pneumatic Tyres: Submitted by - Ajay Kumar ROLL NO. - 1609740903

An airless tire, also known as a non-pneumatic tire, does not use air to provide cushioning and traction like a traditional pneumatic tire. It uses flexible tread and shear bands that deform temporarily over spokes when hitting bumps then return to their original shape. Several companies have developed different designs, including NASA for the Apollo lunar rover, Michelin, and Bridgestone. Airless tires provide benefits like eliminating blowouts and maintenance but also have drawbacks like added vibration and higher cost compared to pneumatic tires. They are used on some small vehicles and military vehicles. Overall, airless tires could have potential if engineers can improve upon current disadvantages.

AIRLESS TYRES /NON-

PNEUMATIC TYRES

SUBMITTED BY- AJAY KUMAR

Topic
.
 What is a pneumatic tyre and its drawbacks.

 What is an airless tyre?

 How it works?

 Different design approaches.

 Advantages and disadvantages.

 Applications.
Pneumatic tyres
A pneumatic, or air-filled, tyre is made of an air tight
inner core filled with pressurized air.

 The pressure of the air inside the

tyre is greater than atmospheric air
pressure, so the tyre remains inflated
even with the weight of a vehicle
resting on it.

 It gives a certain degree a cushioning

effect as the tyre hits bumps in the road.
Drawbacks
 Puncture or Blowout.

 A blowout at high speeds can lead

to a dangerous car accident.

 Variations in air
pressure changes tyre
performance.

 Can blow out by gunfire or

explosion.
What is airless tyre?
 Airless tyres or
Non-pneumatic
tyres (NPT) ,
are tyres that are
not supported
by air pressure.

How it works?

shear bands deform
temporarily as the spokes
bend, then quickly go
back to the initial shape.

Advantages
 Eliminates air leaks or tyre blow outs.

 No maintenance required.

 Facilitate recycling.

 Remains mobile even with some of the spokes are damaged

or missing.

 Durability & Long Life.

 Can take gunfire or explosion.

 Less environmental impact.

Disadvantages
 Lack of adjustability.

 Vibration.

 Different Manufacturing technique.

 Not as economic as pneumatic tyres.

Applications

Used on some small vehicles

such as riding lawn mowers and
motorized golf carts.

In backhoe or bulldozers.
continued.. For Military vehicles

Also used in
All Terrine Vehicles (ATV)
conclusion
For years, vehicles have been running on
pneumatic tyres and there was almost a full stop for
any further improvement of tyres. In 20th century the
engineers have come up with a new concept where
the tyres never require air, if the drawbacks that are
being encountered presently are and improved then
there is good future for these tyres.

And the vehicles can run without the necessity of air.
