BBB NAPOLEONIC RULE AMENDMENTS

Infantry were split into three classes based on levels of training, combat experience and
emphasis on musketry as follows:

Poor Shots: those with little training and no emphasis on musketry, for example, 1813
French.

Average Shots: the majority.

Good Shots: well-trained with an emphasis on musketry and probably in two ranks
rather than three, for example, but not exclusively, decent British and British trained
allies.

Weapon 3” 6” 9” 12”
Poor Shots 1
Average Shots 1.5 1
Good Shots 2 1

Gun 3” 12” 18” 24”

Horse 3 2 1
Light 6 4 2 0
Medium 6 4 3 1
Heavy 9 5 4 2
RKT Rockets 6” range, no Factor, 1 Right shif

We also wanted to better represent the distinctions between types of cavalry, much more
important in this period, and thereby also add the right ‘flavour’. We therefore introduced the
following new categories:

Heavy – mainly cuirassiers.

Medium – dragoons.
Light – the hussars, chasseurs and light dragoons.
Lancer, which we ruled would count as Heavy Cavalry against Infantry and Medium
against other cavalry.
Irregular – we just had to have Cossacks! We also allowed them to make a 90 degree
turn once in their move without penalty, as opposed to the normal 45 degrees.

Artillery required little change except in terms of fire factors (see above), but we also allowed
them to be Veteran, giving one right shif when firing. This only applied to the French Guard
Artillery. We also added in horse artillery, which moves as cavalry and which is removed afer
one hit (they are, effectively, half the size of the foot batteries in “Bloody Big Battles”).
The only new formation we introduced was the square. This did not necessarily equate to all
units in a division being in square, but rather a deployment, including squares, designed
specifically to receive cavalry. Given the restrictions of the formation, it would fire as reduced,
give a right shif to those shooting at them, give a Bonus in the assault if facing cavalry but a
penalty if facing infantry.

In the assault, we simply added the weight of the cavalry, square and we decided that infantry
firing at charging cavalry would incur a lef shif, representing the possibility of rushed firing,
and that skirmishers could not count; we felt they might be more focussed on running for cover!
We also allowed cavalry to count as double in terms of odds as they would otherwise have been
too heavily penalised. The new Assault Table looks like this:

ASSAULT MODIFIERS
Defender in cover -1 to -6
Defender Outflanked +2
Advantages
Odds 3:2 / 2:1 / 3:1 1/2/3
(cav count double)
Aggressive 1
In Depth 1
Square v Cavalry 2
Cav v Disrupted inf 1
Heavy Cav 1
Penalties
Disrupted 1
Low on Ammo 1
Fragile 1
Spent 2
Square v Infantry 1
Light Cav 1
Irreg Cav 1

And finally, we added one new characteristic specifically for the Russians due to the many
records emphasising their resilience under fire. We called this Stoic and it would allow Russian
infantry to lose an extra base before becoming Spent.
